taillight wiring

So I want to replace my oem tail light assembly with a vintage assembly.

the vintage assembly requires festoon bulbs and the plate has 2 alloy posts with holes toward the end.

I, obv naively, soldered the wires to the posts, placed the bulbs between the posts--not a tight fit--tried it with and without the plastic insert on the ground side--and no-go.

I believe others have used bulb holders and have jbwelded them onto the posts.

You guys have any advice to give? Anything obvious I'm missing or doing wrong? I'm reasonably sure the wires are wired correctly and the connections are good.
