30 Million Dollar Ferrari 250 GTO

There is a rumor running around that a Ferrari 250 GTO reportedly sold for $30 million.

Does anyone know the buyer or anything about the sale?

Here is an article about it:

The NEW craze is going to buy a F250 as a donor car tobuild a Fiero replica kit car.

Would not shock me, seeing as a Cal Sypder went for 11 million recently

High water marks? I think so. Time will tell

Back in 90 a 250 GTO sold for 14M.

Had an aquaintence who could have bought one for 18K back in 74. He bought the Tessarosa for 4K as that was all he had being just out of HS. He sold the TR in 87 for 250K bought a 5000 sq ft Tudor in Hancock Park for 500K. Last I heard of hin he dropped 250K into a Tiffany floor lamp.

My money's on Ralph Lauren as the buyer.

That said, I wonder how much it would cost to outfit a small factory capable of producing an equivalent 50 year old Ferrari replica. I'm guessing for less than $30M you could crank out 250s faster than Chuck Beck. Then you could at least drive the piss out of them.

I understand the appeal of the original as an investment and/or work of art, blah blah... I can actually fathom someone spending $10M or so on some Ferrari art. But $30M I just can't get my mind around.

Consider that the new VW factory (which is outrageously overbuilt) cost only $200M 5 years ago. I guess I would just spend my $30M a little differently.

So, I guess that spending $50 or 100 million for a nice painting is out of the question, then? Can't even drive those....

I am almost positive that Ralph Lauren already owns a 250GTO. I doubt he'd want another. I wonder who it is?

Tabs?

TABS doesn't have the 30M to blow.

A 30M car...that is the ultimate in toys. For the guy that has more money than he knows what to do with.

I woulda found a great 275 GTB4 and called it a day. Or a California Spyder. ..even that is too much dinero...how bout a 275 GT.

Naw my tastes have changed. I would have my S and maybe a Speedster. I would have to think hard about the Ferrari.

there was a website a couple of years ago, showing a restoration of a 250 gto
frankly it already looked like a decent car in the before pictures, but hell, they tore it down completely anyway ( i guess pics don't show the details)

found it

Trust me on this, Tabby...owning a pristine early S is highly overrated...it gets boring after a few decades.

My friend let me drive his 275GTB for my birthday. This was about 5 years ago I guess- it was only worth as much as my house. Still, you could imagine I wanted to be careful. You can't drive those "careful" -they just don't work. I didn't "get it" until he urged me to push it.

When the revs and speed went up the tranny worked better, the steering became easier, and the sound became breathtaking.

Still, not something I would want to own. I would have ulcers over the worry.

He just sold it for a little more than twice what my house is worth. Sounds like he did ok. Ulcers must have been killing him

Not quite, if we're talking about values, either purported or potential.

The 30+ GTO's are practically serial production cars in comparison to the two remaining (of three built) Bugatti 57SC Atlantics.

The Williamson collection of 12 Bugattis brought over $15.5M last month at Gooding at Pebble.

Nice, but most notable was the car that wasn't included in the auction lot, the '35 57SC Atlantic that won the Pebble Beach concours overall in 2003.

Dr. Williamson passed away last June. He was gracious enough to let me crawl all over/under his car at Elkhart Lake in 2005 with a group of other Bugatti owners. He was driving in it in a tour of the original Elkhart Lake road course along with the rest of us in our far more modest cars. A couple of my photos from that day:

As noted here, while the family withheld the car from the Gooding sale at Pebble last month, it's estimated that the contemplated private sale of this 57SC could bring up to $50M, making it the most valuable (currently, and potentially anyway) car in the world by far.

Price and/or value notwithstanding, its a striking piece of coachwork and engineering.

Tim

Tim, Years ago a friend told me that he believed that Bugatti cranks were turned out of a solid block of steel. Any truth to that?

Hey, $30 mil. for a car or $30 mil. for a painting, I'll take the car. It's all what you want in life.
