Was setting up a booth for a convention in Amsterdam, after flying there that morning. Yep, I was in the air the night before...
Being a broadcast equipment show, there were monitors all over showing cnn.... it was surreal. After international travel was shut down, I wondered when I might be able to head home.. Fortunately, the travel ban was lifted before my 10-day stay was up. What a sad day... |
I remember I had a flight to an interview about 3 days after the flight ban was lifted. There was a guy in a turban on our plane. Poor guy had like 100 people staring at him waiting for him to make a wrong move. He looked like he might cry- it was pretty bad.
Worst part was, A. A real terrorist wouldn't wear the garbs, and B. It was a hindu-type tuban, not arab. |
In a conference room at work...

I was airborne on my way to New York from Dublin when it happend, Hour and half into the flight they told us we were turning around and going back to Dublin.
When asked they gave no explaination, not a good feeling, I figured something was wrong with the plane. Didn't find out what happen until we exited the plane in Dublin. |
Manhattan, one mile north of WTC. RIP Paul and Larry.

I was at my desk at ford Motor co in Dearborn, MI. After a few hours, the company sent everyone home and I remember thikning how eerie it was not to hear or see any planes in the sky...

So much poignancy in this thread...
I was in my office and had the TV on and set to CNN. In those days CNN had a good pulse of the political issues that may have affected my command. When the second airliner hit, I sent everyone home...where they needed to be. |
In uniform, one boot on, getting ready to pull the other one on....
Headed up to the base to fly for the military... Phone rings, it's Mom... "Richard, you better turn on the TV..." I turned the TV on in time to see #2 hit in NY. things got busy after that... -a good buddy of mine, LeRoy Homer, was the F/O on United Flt 93 that went down in Pennsylvania. We're dedicating our new Squadron building to him next month. |
I was in my 10th grade math class taking a test, when some kid ran in from the hall to inform us that someone had flew a plane into one of the twin towers.
This got my class in an uproar, but my teacher would not turn on the TV so we could see what had happened, so I didn't see any actual footage until around 12.30pm or so, when it was all on repeats. Damn Catholic school! |
Driving betwen to job sites.
Went home and turned on the TV. Sat there thinking what world have I just brought my first son in to. He was just under 6 months old at the time. I still cant watch the documentary shows on the day. |
Wasn't going to add to this.. it hurts.. but then, why not? Watching History Channel at the same time and keep tearing up..
I was at corporate headquarters in Atlanta. Had just flew in the night before. Must have been shortly before 9:00 or so. A co-worker yelled across the cube farm that the WTC was hit by a plane. I thought.. huh?? Tried to pull up the major news sites and nothing would load?? Went across to the other building (different division and more populated) and found a cube that had a 4" TV. Standing with several other colleagues and watched the second plane hit.. silence of disbelief. Then the tower(s) collapse.. The hotel bar that night was FULL of people in silence staring at the replays on the screens. No talking, no discussions.. Was due to fly home out of Hartsfield on Thursday PM (as I recall.. may have been Friday?) MWA was one of the first flights cleared to take off again. I went early because it was obviously touch and go. Waiting for the flight time, I parked on a hill overlooking the runways.. nothing, no movement at all from an airport that normally launched a plane every 90 seconds. Spooky... My flight left from concourse D. If you know Hartsfield, it's huge.. and the gate was way at the end. All I could think of was SK's the Langoliers. It was absolutely eerie! I could look from one end of the concourse to the other and there was not one single person to be seen. The flight was tense, all the silverware was gone.. at least there were still the chocolate chip cookies... Seems like a world ago.. |
As I type this I'm watching 9/11: Millionaire Widows on tv. They showed a shot of a "missing" flyer on a telephone pole for our close family friend who died in the north tower. That was eerie. His name is Mark Rassweiler and the street where I used to live has been renamed Mark Rassweiler Way.

My wife and I were taking the day off (her birthday) to go to the fair. We got up early and while I was taking a shower she told me a plane had hit the world trade center. I thought hmmmm... it must be a crappy weather day in NY and a small plane hit the bldg. Then I heard her scream. WE watched the images as we both put on our uniforms and then we drove to the base. My SQ generated our first mission the next day and within 17 days I was eastbound. My wife changed her BD celebration day. Used to be a special day for her.

I was in Boston and my wife dragged me out of the shower to see the news on TV.
