Cutlery ... OK I need a 12 step program

I've mentioned Ralph and his ebay store a few times in the other cutlery thread ... and in all superlative positives. Well, several months ago he had a knife for sale that I missed out on, an in the course of other correspondence, mentioned I was upset at myself for missing it...

As it turns out, I get an email from him 30 mins ago that he's got ANOTHER of these uber-rare knives, and this one's got the original box -- and he remembers that I wanted one, so he'll offer it to me before he posts it (at a discount from what he'd start the auction for).

It's an old Sheffield flexible slicing knife, with horn handles, made for sale in Asprey stores in London and the old original Abercrombie and Fitch in New York. For those of you who don't remember, before Abercrombie became synonymous with emaciated adolescent "fashion", it was a premier seller of outdoor and housewares.

OK, I did NOT own a large, flexible filet knife, and had been looking for one.... yeah, maybe I've got a problem.

JP

The difference between collecting knives & collecting spoons is testicles.

JP, you may need help. I'm guessing that boy was a few coins. I thought I was bad for buying a set of Chinese knock off santoku knives (surprisingly good) from Sam's when I already had a decent set. But you are off the chain!

It gets worse.... I asked him to throw this unique japanese paring knife in for $10.

Here's the thing: just yesterday I stumbled across a great deal on a carbon steel 9.5" takohiki (a very unusual type of slicer with a single bevel and a squared-off tip; used a lot for octopus). And I said to myself, "self, you don't need another slicer. It's cool, but it's not $100 cool, and you don't need another slicer"

Granted, the takohiki is not flexible (this one is)... but I was doing so good until temptation found ME, right in my dayum mailbox! !!!

Ah well.

Hey J.P.,

Don't worry about it. My wife and my sisters likes cutlery, too.

JP, I guess I'm lucky. I can get by with a nice cleaver, a chef's knife, filet knife and my "jack of all trades" ulu.

Your collection is very impressive!

Hells yeah, I mentioned it -- and here's a link: http://stores.ebay.com/ralph1396

He's more into cutlery than pocket/defense knives -- but that one is sweet!, and Seki is renowned for excellent steel.

BTW, if you click Ralph's store and items show up listed in order of highest price first, scroll down a page ... don't plotz.

And, hey, if y'all get something from him (he has the King waterstones, which I love!), mention JP!

Heh -- probably not. But, some the knives the japanese use to cut up tuna are that size, if not a little bigger!

$219.05 ... http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Kikuichi-Damascus-Steel-Granton-Santoku-Chef-Knife_W0QQitemZ260278629162QQihZ016QQcategoryZ1166 0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp1742.m153.l1262

It's not the crazy, artsy damascus you can find on other knives (including other Kikuichi knives) but it provides all the actual benefits of damascus treatment --- in this case, with grantons!

I trust and really love Kikuichi. YMMV, but these guys have been making swords for 800 years, including for the Emperor for several hundred of those years, and still family owned. Ralph offers excellent prices for this stuff. You might find it cheaper if you had an "in" somewhere, but only by a coupla bucks... and it's good to have a relationship with your knife guy (see above )

EDIT -- The knife linked above is a 61-62 Rockwell C scale, and it's Stainless! if you've read my other posts about hardness and stainless, you'll appreciate how amazing this knife is.

Just to be clear -- I have no affiliation with Ralph and get no commission or anything. I'm just enthusiastic about this stuff, and he's a great source of information and quality, often unique, products.

Man, I remember going to the A&F store in San Fran back then. No such store in LA that I knew of. They had great kids toys too. The kind adults play with. Yep, they lost it.

BTW, cool knife. I don't let my wife touch my couple of cooking knives. Or the carving knives for that matter.
