I don't think this is accurate...at all. The fact is, the same reason they get crap for not being "open" to other OS's is the same reason the user experience is so much better. The hardware and software are made by the same company, so they have complete control over the user experience. I work on a PC at a place where I do some office work to help a friend out, and I can't believe how much more complicated it is to do simple things on the PC. I'd consider myself a very technically adept user as well.

That said, this thread isn't about Mac vs. PC...but to say that they don't do anything any better or worse than a PC is just plain ol' inaccurate. Read any consumer website or magazine and they'll tell you the same thing.

Ok I'll bite. What is "much more complicated to do simple things" on a PC vs. a Mac? Really. I want to know.

That's not entirely true. Macs do not word process better than PCs. And no, I'm not talking about writing simple emails or letters. I'm talking about hardcore editing, bookmarking, search and replace features, etc. of very large documents. Unless I'm missing some key shortcuts somewhere, I'm spending at least 2-to-1 time trying to edit with a Mac as I am with a PC. The pull down menus (command I, F, V, etc.) don't even work properly on a Mac as they do on a PC.

This is on Microsoft Office, by the way. I don't use the Apple word processing software because no one else I deal with uses it.

Nooooooooooo! I had an HP laptop for about a year. I gave it away at the end of that year. I had 5 keys break, the display backlight went out twice, and had to restore the entire OS once after getting the blue screen of death. As a bonus, their customer service is the worst I've dealt with, and based in India.

Someone here posted a picture of the exact same HP laptop that I had. They had triple tapped it right through the screen. A fitting end to a real POS.

I love 2 things about Dells

1 - buy as a small business, and get the 3 year next day on site parts warranty

2 - they all take Linux really really well

HP just came out with some very nice looking systems (laptops) ...great displays. ..and seem to be a better deal than the Lenovo's.

The keyboard is everything to me. IBM has always had the best keyboard feel. Apple next. Dell third.

Some of the features that standout for me are; the full keyboard (w/ 10-key). Also, the 'mouse' stick and pad are 3 button (rather than 2)

I have yet to try these for tactile performance, but like the spec's.

...I'm looking at the 8730w

+1

Case and keyboard are critical for me, why I run a Lenovo.

I've used Thinkpads starting w/ X40, then X41, T60, now X60.

They are high-quality machines, all business w/ no consumer frills. I like them. The X-series have great battery life - I was getting 5 hours when battery was new.

Also, they have a recovery feature - if fatal data corruption leads to blue screen, press button and laptop restored to as-new state. I've used it once.

I can't speak to the consumer-oriented Thinkpad models.

I used to have an IBM Thinkpad A30. That was the best machine ever. It just simply died from use. I think my first 10,000 Pelican posts were completed on that machine. :D
