good deal on a new BMX for my son :)

Went to Goodwill today to grab a couple shorts for school and come upon a new Mongoose BMX bike in the store. It has the 48 spoke rims, which I always wanted as a kid but never got, and a gyro. I almost freaked out and then I looked at the price tag. It was marked at $29.95 . I grabbed the bike and walked with it while I grabbed the shirts I originally shopped for. I brought the bike back home and did a more careful inspection. There are stickers still on the bike (inspection stickers) and ones even on the pedals which are not worn. There isn't even a scratch on the bike or a spec of dirt anywhere. The bike was brand new but looked like it was test ridden by a hardcore teenager. I noticed a couple things wrong with the bike.

1) rear tire has weird wear patterns. It looks as if it was taken to top speed and the rear tire skidded for about 30 feet. Repeated about 5 times.

2) The chain had broken links. How could this happen?

3) the crank was badly bent just like the cranks I use to bend when I rode as a teenager

4) The rear rim is out of true.

5) I suspect the rear axle is bent and will look into this further.

I removed the chain and installed one I had in the garage. I then took the bike outside and proceeded to do about 7 bunny-hops 2 feet high to bend the crank back in to correct position. I will true the rim and replace the rear tire.

All in all I think we got a heck of a deal on the bike. It rides nice and my son loves it.

Good for you, but in case you do not know, Mongoose makes cheap Wal Mart bikes now and the bike you just bought might be an $89.00 Wal Mart special.

I don't know what yearthis started, but the new Mongooses are cheap low quality bikes unlike the quality Mongooses made "back in the day".

Sucks to see old brands like Mongoose and Redline being used to produce cheap bikes.

That's a 2007 Mongoose Crush....Retailed around $100, sold at Target as well as other stores. As well as it rides nice, that's all that matters...

I saw the $100 bike thing after I posted this. I went on the mongoose website and it wasn't even listed there. I then googled the bike and notice it was sold at Target for about $100.

Back in the day when I biked a brand name such as Mongoose or Haro actually meant something. These were bikes crafted to high standards. I am sort of bummed but the bike does ride fairly nice for the price. If I didn't see it was sold at Target for $100 I would of been fooled it was equivalent to a $400 bike 18 years ago.
