West coast colleges: need some advice on guidance for one of my stepdtrs
 

As you know I have twin stepdtrs that are now seniors in HS. One has her mind made up on an in state school largely predicated on the guy she has been dating for the last 1 1/2 years:(

The other one is more of a free spirit and undecided. She's a star volley ball player at her HS but honestly not currently at a level that would warrant attention from a major school. Largely because of physical constraints (a willowy 5'10" and 125 lbs coupled with limited coaching/program quality in her HS). Yet she wants to play in college. She is realistic about where she might play at this stage...but with proper program she might develop into a higher caliber player.

She is a 3.6 gpa student with a decent ACT score (29) so she is capable in that aspect. Her career goals are leaning towards something in the medical dental field but not entirely focused yet. Her father and stepmom are California residents so I assume she might be considered as a resident.

As such, I'm trying to get her to at least consider looking into some California schools as an option. She's slowly warming to the idea....any suggestions/guidance from any of you on the left coast? School recommendations? Particularly JUCO's/CC's?.

Where in CA do they live?

A: The admissions officer of each community college determines student residency status, according to state laws and regulations that specify the residency standards. The legal definition of California residency requires at least one year of physical presence in this state, coupled with the capability and the intent to make California your permanent home. However, if you have initially been classified as a nonresident, you will be required to demonstrate that you have been financially independent for at least three years before being reclassified as a resident. There are additional provisions covering special cases. Contact a college admissions officer for a residency questionnaire and other pertinent information.

I've seen pics of your step-daughters. View with caution any advice from the pigs on this board, particularly if they recommend schools near their home. By the way, have you thought about CSU Stanislaus? Great school, small town, volleyball team. If she needs accommodations, perhaps I could help.

Just depends on where they want to live and how much money they (you) have. Plenty of great schools in CA, and I'm a fan of small liberal arts colleges, but they are pricey.

Humboldt State is top granola school; UC Davis even better but bigger, more research oriented

with a 3.6 and good test scores, try to get into a UC school - the opportunities are just much better & the degree is simply more highly regarded

I know plenty of good faculty in the CSU system (in biology) and assume other areas are similar b/c faculty positions are incredibly competitive. But there will not be as much challenge from other students in the CSU system.

Another approach is to try and find the public school that most closely approximates a small, high quality liberal arts college. Evergreen St. in Wash. used to be that way, but they lost the ability to hand pick their students a few years ago.
