Ryder Cup Thread

The most exciting event in golf, and near the top in all of sports, no? Too bad the last couple have been blowout wins by the Euros. Not this time though...our boys have a 5 1/2 - 2 1/2 lead after the fist day. That's the biggest lead by an American team after one day since 1979.

Still, the US let a couple get away on the 18th, in the last matches of both the morning and afternoon rounds. I have to wonder if we may look back and rue those missed opportunities come the Sunday singles. We could easily be up 6 1/2 - 1 1/2, which would be a big hole for the Euros to dig their way out of. Now, one good showing tomorrow, and they're right back in it.

That said, Zinger called a great game as Captain Friday. He found the perfect partner for Phil, who is getting his Ryder mojo back. The Leonard/Mahan pair is cooking too, with Mahan playing scary good.

Some great golf today, with better still to come

No tiger to bring the team down... ironic if they win without him

You could be right. With all the attention he gets, maybe it takes away from the team thing. His Ryder Cup record is not bad, but not great either.

Still, in the singles, is there anyone you'd rather have to make a 10-footer to win the Cup on the final green?

I like competition and have played golf my entire life (from about 8 YO on), I don't like the Ryder Cup event. JMO It is especially bad as a spectator event, too many people around too few holes. I'm surprised there aren't fist fights in the gallery. I'd prefer to spend my money at a Jimmy Buffet concert and I'd have a lot more fun.

I hope the US wins but most likely will not watch it on TV.

Been playing since I was 9, and I have to say I'm in widgeon13's camp, and it seems to me that the players carry about the same attitude. Did you catch Phildo's remarks prior to the event? He said something to the effect of not caring to be a leader to younger guys.

I might see some shots b/c it's on a tv in the house, or on sports center, but I don't waste my time watching it. Not a big event, IMHO.

I hear the Dallas boys are carrying the team, good for them.

Phildo is about to get his hat handed to him, this jerk hasn't won a Ryder Cup match since 1999. USA is on the brink of letting this thing go!

usa! usa! usa!

widgeon13 09-21-2008 12:10 PM

It's more like the WWF than golf! I hope these guys don't blow it!

Usa! Usa! Usa! Usa!

A great finish for a great event. Widgeon and mattdavis..."don't like the Ryder Cup"..."Not a big event"..??? Well, your loss.

Ok, maybe it's tough to be there in person, with such a big crowd. but then, so maybe is a Super Bowl. But for human drama, I can't think of an event that matches it. These guys absolutely play their hearts out. Top athletes who are playing for pride, for thier country, and for their team. The Ryder Cup is what sports is all about, or should be all about.

Some memorable moments...Stricker's putt for par and a halve on 18 on Saturday to keep the US lead...Anthony Kim's whomping of Sergio...Hunter Mahan's long putt on 17. And just about anything coming out of Boo Weekly's mouth. And even though the match was over before the Curtis/Westwood match concluded, that was a great effort by Ben over the back nine.

Ian Poulter was a Lion for the Euros in a losing cause. 5 points!

Congrats to the US squad, and Cap'n A!

Glad you enjoyed it so much. The only thing really good about it is that I believe it raises money for charity. I'm glad the US won, I'll leave it at that.:D
