boone und crockett 420 bull nailed-az

well kiddys , a really really patient archer extrodinaire nailed a beautiful 6 x 6 bull elk this weekend outside ashfork az. on saturday.

unreal rack on this guy. saw the rack at the williams, az. "beer/booze/bait/bullets/processor/taxidermy shoppee"(my fave) . got our blood running big time.

had a great scout w/amigo and younger kid. showed both many miles of happy hunting grounds and really pounded some rocks exploring avenues of ingress/egress for our hunt area. took kids new 480 honda and he had a blast buzzing roads getting to know directions.

stopped off at kaibab lake and drowned some z-rays with no luck. kid nailed a monster small mouth bass at least 6" long! SCAREY BIG! damn near broke his arms reeling it in!

man the weather was beautiful 77 high 44 low w/some rain to keep the dust down.

since we aint stupid and been doing this hunt thang forever, going up scouting during archery only hunts gives you lots of insight on our hunt. archery guys camp only in areas where bulls roam. ha ha we gps'ed their camp sites, we also noticed where they were hunting and where they were not hunting.......ha ha another clue!

since i have 2 bows and have played the arrow game unsuccessfully on deer and javelina i really have to give credit where due on these freak-a-zoids of the hunting world. 40yds max distance.........to nail the hell and DROP an 800+ pound madder than hell/hornier than hell/ elk! no sidearms allowed.

water was everywhere so seeing tanks with blinds and tree stands gave us really good clues on where elk are hanging these days. everythang changes come snowfall time. our ingress/egress, where elk are hanging out for feeding, all help making good hopefully quality elk yield decisions come late november for us.

that's a beautiful area up there...6A...I've bow hunted the area 2x. Never let the air out of an elk there, but got into 'em. This time of year is absolutely gorgeous. A 420 bull is a TOAD! How crowded during general season? I like the split seasons during the archery, since you can kinda guess whether its better to wait a couple weeks to see if the rut goes full on. Too bad for us outta state guys trying to draw there Good luck, and if you need to loose some backstraps or steaks... BTW...this thread is worthless w/o pix.

the unit is 10 not 6a. 75 archery tags in the middle of the rut. lots to do and see as far we are concerned. finding them is a herculean feat. letting the air outta juan so it falls within a few miles is beyond belief in our book. hell nailing juan so it drops w/a mcmillian .338 26" barrel w/ 250 gr. moly bullets is off the charts.

elk hunting........about the hardest damn thing you will ever do aside from joining the marines!

since weather is a huge factor in this unit, i have had juan previous bull tag there many many moons ago, we like to scout alot, or as reasonable as possible. if its hot........elk stay on bill williams mtn. and surrounding pines. if its getting cold, meaning drifts and yer dressed like the michelin man, well they will go down into the junipers and then its door to door searching unless you like sitting at waterholes all day(a hell of alot of tanks here). not a lot of elevation in unit to just sit and glass and then go pop juan.

right now we are focusing on the area north of I-40, williams to ash fork. why? access in the event of heavy snow. farmers almanac predicting wet winter here. roads turn to slush/mush/mung/gook/slime and it doesnt matter if ya got a range rover disco, a humvee, a trophy truck, chained up, lockered jeep....................YOU AINT GOING NOWHERE!!!!! jes picture GLAZED DONUTS FOR TIRES!

quads fair about an iota above the aforementioned. feets dont fail me now!

as far as the pic, fergot my camera sorry. this was one nice 6x6 "toad" for archery.

SWEET! my next bull elk will be archery only...i am done with a rifle. i may never ever get another elk, but to attempt to get up close and personal is a great goal. i am now more about the event, than the prize.

disclaimer...now when i become old and not so mobile, i will rifle hunt again for elk.

bummer no pics. so is a 6x6 a "royal'?

Hunting is done with bow and arrow. With rifles, it's more like shopping.

It can be hunting with firearms. Just limit the range to a similar distance.

All of my deer stalking in Scotland is 50 yds. max. Stalking Red Deer (genetically a twin to Elk) in the Highlands of Scotland on the heather moors is beautiful beyond belief. Only the folds in the terrain and weather for cover and lots of things to spook the deer (sheep, walkers, off road vehicles, etc.) beyond your control. Fantastic stuff.
