hey, will wearing those chemistry lab goggles make cutting onions tearfree?

ouch, i was almost crippled dicing shallots last night. do you think it will work? or does the onion vapor creep up nasal passages.

my knife is laser sharp. so that isnt it.

sorry just bored, trying to avoid making a phonecall at work..

2 things you can do-

1- refrigerate the onion before cutting.
2- cut them outside.

I literally go blind from cutting onions. I used to work at Subway many eons ago, and one night they told me to cut onions. I got through have a sack of them before I went blind. I couldn't open my eyes. I was the only guy there, and when people can up to get sandwiches, they were really freaked by my crying. The next day, I told my boss I would never, ever cut onions again. I can't even imagine how painful mace must be.

If I am cutting just one, I can get away with it. If I am gonna be dicing them up, I do it on the porch.

It's the oil in an onion that vaporizes at room temp. keeping them cold and cutting them under cold water helps. I don't think Chem googles would work because they have vents for airflow to keep the goggles from fogging up.

That should work assuming they seal air tight.

I believe a piece of bread in your mouth will also work. But I don't do the actual chopping at my house...

I heard if you burn a candle right next to the cutting board, the tears won't flow...

If you wear those nerdy chemistry safety goggles while cutting onions, and post a video on youtube for us to watch, I guarantee we'll be the ones tearing up from all the laughing.

I wear contacts and cutting onions has never bothered me.

When I worked as Sbarro in college, I did cut jalapenos from time to time.

One night, it was the last thing I did. I cut the peppers, put them away, and went downstairs to change. I must have scratched my eye and my sack, because on the walk home, my eye starting burning and watering, and so did...you know. I took a shower as soon as I got to my dorm room, which of course just spread out the pepper oil.

I worked in the kitchen at the Officer's Club on the military base at Rota, Spain one summer while visiting my parents who were stationed there.

I peeled and crushed innumerable cloves of garlic. After about an hour my thumb started to burn from the garlic oil.

Apparently, according to the article that I posted above, a candle works, lighting the tap of a gas stove works, putting vinegar on the cutting board works and wearing air tight swimming goggles works.
