Any school teachers here? Thinking of career change..
Ok...I've been with my airline for a few years now. I occasionally fly still, but my primary function has been in the training department. It's insane how they do things at my company. I've been trained on two aircraft (ERJ-145 and the ERJ-170) and I teach recurrent and upgrade on both. The kicker is, that I actually teach for all three of our companies.
So....I teach 2 different airframes for 3 different airlines. Lots of systems, three GOM's, three SOP's, etc. Lots of information to know, and frankly, it's burning me out. I applied to the FAA for an ATC position a while back, and I aced their pre-employment testing. Now it's just a waiting game. On another note... Indianapolis is hurting for secondary teachers....math, science, and special education. In fact, they have a program for non-teachers where they issue an emergency teaching license, and also have you go to graduate school at nights to get your masters. Would any teachers like to expound on the experience? Thanks! -Embraer

SC has a program where someone with experience in industry can teach in field of Bachelor's degree & work toward a certificate. Most go back to to industry.

If you love teaching, do it. No higher calling imho.
If you don't love teaching, find something else to do. It should not be a "parachute" option. |

The pay would be more than what I'm making at the airline

You should probably first do some classroom observation; see if you really can get into it.

They pay is 70K a year (top pay), with benes. You get out by 3:00pm and a 3 + month vacation. Not counting all the other BS holidays. Get this, if you do summer school and some after school crap, you can get above 90K. I like it and I do it part time at a year round school 3 hours a day. Start by 7:15 and out by 11:00am. I work for 4 months and get 2 months off and do it all over again. The rest of the time, I am a general contractor. I love that more, and the pay is much better.

My advice, it ain't the punk kids, its the parents and the other teacher that piss you off. So, brace yourself for that. They have no freaking clue what's going on in the real world. I'll try to give you some example later when I acome back from dinner. Jeff |

My brother left a lab position after 10 years and an MI at age 32 (very athletic, eats/ate like a gerbil, and ran two road races that summer)...is now a third grade teacher, is really into it and, after only 3 years teaching, is nearly a celebrity in his costal Oregon town.
I obtained a teaching certificate in grad school and never used it. It's not for everyone. For many kids, teachers are forced to be parents as well. When the parents finally show up, the job can really suck. Yet, you definitely can be THE difference in a young life. |

the reason why most people become teachers is because they love to teach, and the kids that come with it. if you really like it, do it. even if it's for year. you will come out knowing you changed someones life... i say go for it.

well....when i was in college, i did student teach. one of my favorite memories of college was having a 4th grade class for a whole week. it was fun being the guy that everyone looked up to....the guy that everybody wanted on their kickball team, etc. (haha).
now that im teaching adults...it's easy. all of my students want (and need to) learn...or else i de-qual them, and they are either out of a job, or going back through training. their motivation is spelled out....i don't need to reinforce it. i'll keep looking into it. i appreciate all of the feedback, guys.

I looked at this as career change recently. Something about the $28k a year starting salary put me off though.....

Find out what grades that includes in Indiana... I'm pretty sure it's either 6th grade and up, or 9th grade and up here. Big difference in how much attitude you get from a 4th grader and students in those upper grades. My wife teaches 7th grade... she has discovered that kids can really get a lot more difficult after that, and she has the best classroom management skills/system I've heard of. She sees a marked difference in the 8th graders... many of them are trying to be tough/cool as they mature and show more independent thought ...aspiring to be high schoolers before they're really there. Not that that's a bad thing... it's part of their coming-of-age process... it's just that it can wear you down as a teacher. It might make you yearn for those students you have now... eager to learn and with no classroom control problems whatsoever.

As a matter of fact I am. You don't know squad about me and why I do it. I am just trying to lay out all the benefits for the guy and talk about the good things which is vacation time. After all, its about time and not money as we get older. I have infulenced a good few inner city kids to go architecture school such as the cal polys. And they did. I never ask for anything nor do I sell myself like many teacher do. Remember I deal with a bunch of rough and tough high school kids. I have a very successful construction business. I don't need to get up at 6:00 am to go to work but I want to do it for the kids. No more architecture and now teach woodshop and try to keep the craft alive and exciting for young people because, God knows, they don't need more computer classes and we are in need of good young trades people. I can't see your face as you are typing on your computer I don't know what you really mean by that. I have made a few teacher angry because of our difference. I was willing to donate 2 days pay for a whole year to a needed program within the school and these guys that run their mouth would come up with half that and they put their tail between their legs never give me crap again. They said similar crap that you did. You decide, why do you think I am there?

BTW Nostatic, tell me about your work ethics. Did you take a job and not ask about what the pay is or how much vacation? I am sure you love it and work comes first before pay and no vacation for the first 4 year would be ok due to your wonderful work ethics.

I can't speak for most, but I can tell you about many of our high school teachers in my school dislike it and are burn out because they can't get the same amount of pay in the real world. Try to ask a high school teacher to work a 8 hour shift and no summer vacation but one week off and see what they say. You ever go to a high school teacher's meeting? Holy sweet ***** and the complain. I never go to them anymore. |
