David Blaine - c'mon, what happened to real magic?

You know, sawing a woman in half, pulling rabbits out of hats, card tricks...

I hardly thinking hanging upside down for close to 60 hrs. is magic. Whatever...

You call it magic, I call it stupid.

Is he blind yet?

Guess not he's cheating.

Maybe the same thing that happened to accountability? I don't know just a wild guess.

What happened to real magic?

The same thing that happened to real music, real news reporting, etc.

Hype and flashy celebrity has taken the place of substance.

Not so fast; Blaine is just trying to emulate the excitement that Harry Houdini did in the old days by pulling escape stunts. Granted, Blaine's don't seem nearly so "death defying" as Houdini's, but then again the world is a different place than in Houdini's day. Don't like him, don't watch him, I don't

Yeah, some of the D Blain/C Angel stuff is impressive, but most of it is just dumb.

A lot of it is obviously done with props/equipment.

Dan in Pasadena 09-24-2008 02:07 PM

Unfortunately, it seems to be getting dumber and dumberer instead of better and betterer.

Walking a tightrope over Niagra Falls is (in a sense) magic. It's definitely exciting.

Playing Batman for a week is just plain silly, IMO.

Not if he had a trick or treat bag with him!:D

Also, not a small point to the original poster (Shhhhh!) there is no such thing as "Real" magic. Pass it on.

scottmandue 09-24-2008 02:24 PM

Well, people who can do card tricks and slight of hand have skill and practice their art.

Blaine just pulls stunts... and no I don't watch him... much more entertaining things to see in life... like watching a dog take a poo in the park. :D

Dan in Pasadena 09-24-2008 02:26 PM

I liked Blaine when all he was doing was levitating (sic?) and throwing playing cards THROUGH windows. Maybe I'm simple but those things impressed me.

I'm going to see Criss Angel in a few days.... I'll let you know how that goes???

Actually Blaine is awful dang good at the card tricks and slight of hand stuff. Probably the best I have ever seen. He had a show years ago ("Street Magic" or something like that?) that was amazing. Some of the stuff he pulled on people blew my mind (and their's).
