I always heard the best thing was to say you are going to get a pen to write it down, then put down the phone and walk away. They wait for you to come back, that wastes their time, and costs them money.

Personally I just hang up the moment I realize who they are. Often don't even bother to say anything.

Wow that was great. Here I thought it was funny when I would switch gears and try to sell them my unused stuff like my motorcycle or sailboat. I would tell them all they had to do to confirm the sale was to give their address. I am truly sad we disconnected our land-line and are now all cellular. I don't get these calls anymore :(
