Planning a day at the drag races
It's been years since I was last at a drag race (Carlsbad raceway, early 80's or so), and I'm jonesing to get to another one with my 21 y/o son and maybe my wife.
I'm looking at the last NHRA event, mid-November in Pomona, which is about an hour up the freeway from me. I am ready to buy some tickets, but I've got some questions I figured the collective wisdom could address. There is competition Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with final eliminations being Sunday. What day would you recommend attending? Should we get reserved seating, or just general admission? Is the food good, should we bring our own? We will bring ear-plugs. What else should we plan on, or plan to avoid? |

You will need good ear plugs. Everyone has access to the pits and the cars are un-Godly loud!
I've been every day. I think that Friday or Saturday is best. On Friday you will not need reserved seating. Sunday is the most crowded and harder to get close to the cars and drivers. The food is typical county fair and usually pretty crappy. I'm going to try and get there again this November as well. Steve

Bring one set of industrial muffs if you have them. For some, ear plugs alone arent enough.
Like Steve said, if you want to get close and personal go Thur or Fri. If you just want to see the runs, go on the weekend. Sunday's will put you mostly in your seat, early days you can spend time at the tree or the trap and get more insight. If you're a AAA member, they will give a one free admission for Thursday, just for the asking at your local AAA facility. About a $22 value. |
