Hydraulic fluid for mid rise lift

So I just bought a mid rise lift. It needs a gallon of hydraulic fluid. What should I use and where can I get it? Can I just buy a gallons worth of brake fluid?

Thanks!

Do not use brake fluid! I have the fluid spec for my lift written the the fluid tank, if nobody comes through with the info during the workday.

Pretty sure my BendPak midrise lift called for simply ATF. Dexron III I believe. I have been using it several times a week for a couple years now with no problems.

Actually, ATF or even engine oil will work fine. I would say half of the Cats you see digging holes use engine oil as hydraulic fluid.

Thanks guys. The instructions simply say a quality hydraulic fluid. None of the local FLAPS had anything but brake fluid.
