Internet access in Germany

I will be traveling in Germany (Sud Bayern, south of Munich) for a few days over the weekend and want to access my e-mail and generally the internet, is there any free convenient way to access w/o paying at the hotels high fees. Internet cafe, Starbucks, etc.

Most of the time I don't bring the computer but I'm in the middle of a house sale and might need to get some documents for review.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Regards

Most hotel security is easily avoided, mostly by not using their DNS servers and using a VPN or ssh tunnel ...

I brought my laptop with me on our last trip to Germany and we ended up just going to internet cafes most of the time to get on the web and they were very cheap. Most of the hotels we stayed at didn't have wireless or connections in the rooms, although some did have a computer in the lobby that was free to use.

When I was there in May I didn't require the internet every day. I stayed away from the cities but managed to find a 'hot spot' when required. One was in a bar, as long as you bought something to drink you could access.
Watch the keyboards, the z and y are switched.

Thanks very much, I'll take any guidance / recommendations I can get. I didn't expect it would be too difficult to find options.

id10t, sorry but I didn't understand anything you wrote but appreciate the thought.

ATT and Compuserve both have good access in Germany. If you have an account (or want to set one up for a month then cancel) that would work fine.

Otherwise you can find internet cafe's most everywhere in Europe. Another idea is to turn the laptop on and try to find a free (unlocked) WiFi signal. Many hotels have this and if you are lucky you can get access.

Joe,
Thanks, we're going back for a long weekend to visit some friends and get out of this rat race for a few days. I do have an ATT account so we will keep that in mind.

Just as an aside, I let my Admiral's Club expire after 30+ freakin years and since I can get in on AMEX platinum (internet access not available to AMEX entrants), those *******s want to charge me a per day fee to get on the internet in the Admiral's Club, with umpteen million miles on AA. Guess customer loyalty doesn't mean shlt to these people. That situation works both ways!:D

I suggest buying a month of T-Mobile it's cheap and redily available over there

Widgeon,

I used to go in the Admirals Clubs all the time and internet access was free there. In fact in most of them they have banks of computers, all with internet access for free. Also had "cat 5" cables lying around desks by the computers for us laptop owners.

Between ATT, internet cafe's and the AC's you should be fine. Just make sure that you download the ATT overseas phone access list before you go.

Joe,

Got the info, I'll probably be better off staying away from the computer and the news anyway. Have the sale of our home in CT going on and supposed to close Oct 31 and buyer have still not signed the contract so trying to stay in touch with my attorney.

We have a mini tension convention going on, if sale doesn't go through, I'm left with an empty house for a while. This should be a fun winter. I can come down from the Adirondacks and camp on my familyroom rug, snowblow the driveway and then leave again. **** ME!:D

I checked w/ ATT and since I am a DSL subscriber in the states, supposedly I can access it at the sites in Europe, Starbucks, Barnes & Noble, McDonald's and some hotel common areas. We'll see??

Went with 30 days of T-mobile and works great.

Have a super car for the autobahn, Audi A5 3.0 TDI, great fun to drive. Pulls like a mule. File too large to load for now.

Did find this puppy on the street though.

There's exits everywhere for it, but it must be a ways from the highway, because you never get there.

Free internet like in the States doesn't really exist in Europe. Not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

Yea and it's also weird that there are lots of streets with the same name "einbahnstrasse"

This is the route I took and it worked great, only disappointment is that I can't use the balance of my days over here. The access was almost everywhere and fast easy hook-up. I guess T-mobile here is not the same as T-mobile there, what a screw job but it was great for the trip.

I think you can still use it , just at a reduced cost.. I know I have used my T-mobile account in Europe many times, not sure of the cost but was way cheaper than signing up for an account over there as I recall.
