Spoon projects
Still very early days, but I am starting to get the items together for the three mandatory rifle projects I have to do over the next 2 years. I will also add some of the other projects that I will be doing as well as they will relate to firearms.
Project 1 is a .204 Ruger rifle based on a FN SPR action. Basically it is a pre 64 Winchester action. I received the action:  This rifle is being built for my wife and will have a composite stock. The optics have not been determined but as we are getting a really good discount from Sightron, it will be something in their line up. Project 2 is really exciting. It is not one of the mandatory projects. I am still negotiating on the selling price but will hopefully get this.  It is a A.H. Fox 12 gauge from 1920/21. It appears to be a CE grade with a single selectable trigger. There is a few issues though. Both the stock and the barrels (down to 24") were shortened at some point in time. It was working the last time the current owner used it but there were some small issues.

The Fox's were the best designed American side by side ever made. Although not really any more sophisticated than an Anson & Deeley design. It was much better engineered than the LC Smith and the needlessly over-complicated Parker. I would sleeve the barrels to restore the length and choke, as well as provide a proper balance to the gun. A new stock is easily made with correct demensions and cast.
Look to purchase a used Leopold scope. Then send it in to Leopold, they will honor the lifetime warranty.

I have a Fox Model B that is just a tank. The stock was replaced after the original one was turned to splinters by my father. I love that gun

The model B is just a savage/stevens 311 with some fancy rolled on engraving. Yes... a tank. No offense, a far cry from any AH Fox. They bought the name, and threw away the product.
"needlessly over-complicated Parker" ...ain't THAT the truth! To me, the 16 gauge Fox Sterlingworth is the most well balanced American shotgun made. I want one, but they seem to elude me at a reasonable price. |

I might point out that Neil's potential project gun is an Ansley H. Fox gun. Ejectors and single trigger, kinda the holy grail of Fox guns. I too recommended sleeving it as the gun would be worth the 2K it would take to do it right. But for the moment, and as a school project, it doesn't need to be done right away.

The Fox is now officially in my possession. I will post some more pictures this week. Not flawless but not a basket case either. Progress pictures will come as I start working on it in the new year.
