What's a good, cheap scope for a 10/22?

I think I'm gonna grab a 10/22 at Wal-Mart unless I can find a better face-face deal locally. They don't come with scopes on them, but I'd want one. No point in a fancy Leupold for a plnker like this. Is Weaver the right one? If so, which model? I'd like to keep it well under $100 total.

BSA and Tasco both make inexpensive red dot sights - $30-50. Barska (sp?) has good quality for the cost. Might want to hit a few local shops and see what they have used or gathering dust on the shelf. I got a really nice Simmons 3-9x for my 22wmr rifle at a shop for $20, had a thick layer of dust on the box.... held it up, the $20 up, and asked "OK?" and the owner said "Yup!"

Doubt you can find a new one 10-22 under $159.00 that is the least expensive one I have found, synthetic stock (Plastic). Easy to spend $250.00 modifying it. They are cheap and fun. If you find one new for less than that, report back I would pick up another one.

id10t 10-15-2008 08:29 AM

MT930 - I've always heard rumor of the $100 10/22 but never seen one... until a few months ago. Snapped it up from a pawn shop, in really good shape. So far I've spent $5 customizing it - on sandpaper. Sanded stock down, cutt off but curve, cut off forend for barrel band at a 35deg. angle. Gonna put an oil finish on it this weekend (another $5-10). Only real money I'm considering is a .920 barrel...

Just missed two super nice ones with scopes and bi-pods, locally, for $250 each. Maybe I'll just grab one at the netx gun show, though it's hard to not spend cash on other stuff at those things before I find the gun I want.

I lucked out at a local store's liquidation sale. I just picked up a pretty nice used Remington 552 auto loader for under $200. Then I bought a Simmons 3-9x40 scope and a Tasco 3-9x40, both brand new for $25 for the pair. That's probably a bit too much scope for the rifle but I wasn't going to leave them sitting on the counter!

From the little I've seen I think you're probably going to be looking at a used .22 to get something half decent at that price.

rick since i have owned and built a coupla of these 10/22's in various configs. look for a used BULL BARREL. no ifs and butts...............

you will thank me. stainless is best. do not buy carbon fiber barrel ask me how i know.

do not buy juan with goofy ass compensator holes at end. PITA to clean..........ask me how i know.

take basic stainless hogue stock model to nelson ford "the gunsmith.com" 32nd and cactus.

tell him to do his magic. look up volquartzen parts. get woody..............order what you can afford.

these have the ability to WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY OUTSHOOTTTT the owner. ie. pop heads off ohio blue tip matches at 100yds with correct match ammo. eley/dynamit nobel.

more fun than barrell of minkies.

practice practice practice.

i put bushnell 3x9's on both of mine. cheap ass dont give damn if it breaks scope.

wally world(walmart) $13.87 per 550 rds federal copper jacket 37 grain.

I have two Tasco scopes. One on my 25-06 and another on my 22-250 they are both 6-24 x42 and work perfectly. I like the mildot cross hairs a lot. Got them on ebay for $50.00 each.

What is a 10/22? Is it just a .22LR or something more special?

It's a Ruger, nothing special, you can buy them at walmart. But there are 1001 'hop up' parts for them.

Thanks.

A .22 but still fun. I've used some Italian ammo called something like Fiocchi which had a bit more bang to it compaired with other .22 ammo. I've just got a cheap Philipino made gun I've had since I was a school kid.

I am messing with the Bushnell 3x9x50 scope on my Remington 700 at the moment and am wondering if I should just transplant it onto a 10/22 and then get a 3x9x40 for the Remington. I think this scope might weigh almost as much as a 10/22 itself. Anyway, I'm off to Ben Avery in a moment to sight this thing in. I've had a hard time doing so, but have a lot more ammo to play with now.

id10t 10-15-2008 11:56 AM

I am also lucky enough to own the 10/22's big brother - the Ruger 44 carbine. Same size/weight as a 10/22, and looks the same too. Except the hole in the end is twice the size :)

slap da bushnell on da 10/22. for remington(hopefully bull barrel .308) get a leupold 3.5 x 10. you will thank me. then get aftermarket extended turrets for windage elevation. if it is .308 call me and i can read off comeups for federal 168grain boat tail hollowpoints. i can get you a deal on a mcmillian stock whatever camo flavor ya want for da remington.

I got a cheap Simmons for my 10/22 on clearance at Dick's. Paid about $50 for it.

It's a piece of crap and the elevation won't go low enough.

I also have a Simmons that came on my Savage 93, and I love it.

Rick Lee 10-15-2008 04:52 PM

Just came from the range and got my Remington 700 all sighted in. I got it to a .75" group for three rounds at 100 yds. So I like this scope now.

FWIW, I have decided to part with my boyhood single shot .22 to make room in the safe and wallet for a 10/22. If anyone wants a VERY sweet Remington Targetmaster with fingergrooves and a Weaver scope for their kid, let me know.

Rick Lee 10-15-2008 11:03 PM

BTW, what the hell is a "pre-warning" barrel on a Ruger?

on2wheels52 10-16-2008 03:46 AM

In 1977 or so Ruger began stamping the barrels on all their firearms with the short paragraph about reading to owners manual prior to using. All things equal, a Ruger without the warning is worth more than one with,.
