Internet Explorer question
 

We just got high speed internet installed yesterday. The only problem is that if I have a second window or tab open, closing that window/tab closes Explorer completely.
If you know which setting to change so that it does not do this, please let me know. I usually open up threads in a second window and when I "X" out of it, I have to start all over again.

Randy's got it backwards though - download firefox first, then kill IE.

Tried using foxfire and got a message that it uses a proxy and the setting was not correct.

Are you using the big red X in the upper right corner, or the small gray x in the individual tab?

Either one will shut down the entire program even if I am just attempting to close a single page or tab

Try running it in No-Addon mode. You likely have some Addon/Tool bar that is causing the problem.

First, a few questions:
So this is new behavior since you got broadband, right?
Who is your ISP?
What version of IE are you running?
Have the latest updates?
Are you running Vista or XP?
Do you have a wired or wireless router?

As SlowToady suggested, try running IE with no add-ons. Here's how with:
Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools, and then click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons).

Does closing a second tab or window still close IE?

It's been about a decade since I changed ISP's, but I'm wondering if you've got a version of IE that was set up to work with a proxy when you got your new service and that's why Firefox won't work.

Yes. Right after the installation of the cable modem etc.
It is through Charter Cable.

Hmmm....it is not wireless so I suppose it would be a wired router.

I started explorer with the add on's disabled and it stopped the problem. Is there a way to go through each add on to figure out which one is causing the problem?

Is there a Bentley Manual for this (I'm kidding:))

Michael, I looked at Charter's site and unless you have two pieces of gear you only have the cable modem which is not a router (they have a package where you get a cable modem and a separate router).

To check which add-ons you have installed, in IE go to:
Tools --> Manage Add-ons --> Enable or Disable Add-ons.

Regarding updates, if you're not running Windows Update regularly or have auto-updates enabled, it would probably be a good idea to look into the advantages of doing so.

If you're married to IE, you might look at the beta of IE8 - although that might open another can of worms if you haven't solved your IE7 issues.

I'd really advise that you try to get Firefox working. It's truly a great browser and it's the only browser I use on my Macs or my PCs.
