laptop to plasma via HDMI

Why when I hook up my laptop to my AV system via HDMI does the sound not work? I thought HDMI carried all signals. What am I missing here?

stevepaa 10-20-2008 01:59 PM

you have HDMI on a laptop? which one?

What is the AV system?

Dell XPS1530

The Receiver is a Sony and the Plasma is a Samsung.

stevepaa 10-20-2008 02:51 PM

so the HDMI from laptop goes to the Sony AV system then to the TV

how about connecting laptop to TV directly via HDMI and see if it is the Sony at fault.

Is it possible there's a preference setting in the computer that controls what's coming out of that HDMI output?

Is it really HDMI, or a mini-DVI-HDMI adapter? DVI won't carry sound.

Correct

If it is an HDMI out, (and they do exist, have one in my conference room,) then you do need to set sound out to HDMI in Control Panel.

If it's DVI then you need to run separate 1/8 audio out (headphone) to receiver input

Maybe, I'll check into that.

It really is HDMI though, it's labeled as such above the connection.

I'll report back momentarily.

I found it but it appears to already be "on".

fxeditor 10-20-2008 04:25 PM

Also check the type of HDMI cable you have. Earlier cables had problems carrying bot the vidro and audio data. I think the latest rev. of HDMI cables is 1.3a but do a check with a site like monoprice.com to be sure.

good luck,
Michael

I just thought of another potential snag for you. Your receiver might ONLY pass video via HDMI and not audio. The Onkyo home theater receiver I got for the bedroom had that problem.

HEEEY that sounds familiar to me as well. Try straight from the laptop to the plasma and see what happens.

lendaddy 10-20-2008 05:21 PM

I'm going to try straight through. I think you guys are correct.

OK, still no dice. I switched the audio output to HDMI being the default and all looked good but even direct to the TV I got nothing.

I'll call Dell tomorrow.

gchappel 10-20-2008 06:29 PM

Please let us know the outcome of this. I am looking into getting a laptop and it ahs to be able to do hdmi output- sound and video.
Thanks
Gary

Do you have another setup where you can verify the HDMI cable is OK?

I do, It was working fine from my DVD player when removed.

rick-l 10-21-2008 06:50 AM

On my samsung tv I had to change the sound mode to PCM(?? I'm not by the tv).

gr8fl4porsche 10-21-2008 06:51 AM

Did you try this?

Right click on Speaker icon in lower right task bar
Select Playback devices
Select Digital Output Device (HDMI)
Set as default
Test for sound, or reboot and test for sound

I did and it did not work. It shows HDMI as the default and the little status bar shows action on the output (bouncing level bar) as if it's playing but I get no sound. I did reboot and still no luck.

I thought I'd chime in.

For my anticipated Mac desktop to 42" Panasonic plasma connection, I ordered a DVI to HDMI adapter cord. From what I understand, the HDMI signal from a computer only outputs video. For sound, you must send audio separately via an adapter cable (3.5mm/M to RCA/M).

Your laptop might have an S video port which can be connected to the comparable S video port on the TV. This connector should contain both video and audio signals.

I'll confirm when I assemble the pieces.
