What's this VW worth?

New top, new stereo, new brakes.

I know you can't determine much from a photo, but there's not rust that I can find. No info on the engine other than it runs fine.

I would say 6-8K if it is a perfect, socal, low mileage westy. I have a regular 71 BAY that I completely redid a couple of years ago. I was really looking at getting a 74 for about 5 grand. They are really nice cars and very roomy ( for home depot runs ).

Widebody911 - I know you know a lot about these. Can you tell the year. I know it's later than a 67.

A friend of my brother's is selling it. It has been in their family a long time and a tragedy forces the sale. I could probably get it for $5k.

My bus

How are they to drive on the freeway - say an hour or two? The reason I am looking is that my son is in Scouting and we are camping a lot these days - at least once a month. I'm getting a little old to spend that much time sleeping on the ground.

And do you think you could live with the color? It is original paint.

Great looking bus Chief!

widebody911 10-22-2008 09:44 AM

I don't know the late bays that well, but it is definitely 72->

Samba prices put it $4k-$9k, but those tend to be on the high side, aimed toward the UK market.

I drove the hell out of mine. Even used it to haul lumber/bricks. On the freeway, once you get them up to speed, they just float along. Gets a little tricky in windy sections, but that's rare. Don't expect to be passing big rigs on inclines, though. They'll be passing you.

That sucker is clean. If you can get if for $5k, I'd jump. Offer $4k and see what happens. Oh, and get rid of the hippie sticker on the rear window!

On the freeway they are great except they are a little light so anything passing you will "scoot you" they are not fast I run mine about 70MPH tops. That one is a fuel injected type 4 motor so it probably has a bit more horsepower than my 64 BHP ( brutally homeless ponies ) good gas mileage as well, they actually have a lower drag coefficient than a beetle.

crustychief 10-22-2008 09:49 AM

5K, I would get it. Thanks DAEPP.

The late buses are like Cadillacs compared to the split-windows. The suspension is pretty compliant and cushy.

Here's a great camper on The Samba for $8,000. A little older tho...

The bus in your picture has a type four engine, the last one you posted has a type 1, out of all the busses with a type one engine only the 71 had dual port intake for extra power. I 72 they went to the type 4 FI engine ( pancake ).

I had the same bus/color ('62?) in the "bread truck" configuration (panel van, double doors both sides). I kick myself (hard) everytime I think about what it would be worth today.

Not mine, but similar:

with that high top, a stiff side wind will blow you into the next lane. big sail. beefy swaybars front and rear, truck rated tires and beefy shocks will help a lot.
