Any Pelican Farmers?

Well worth a humble thought.

With the business wheels spinning like crazy, high tech commodities, lofty job descriptions - consultant this, adviser that, stock market, bonus, IT etc etc etc...

..the most important gig in the world is still farming.

Surprisingly enough I am told its possible to live without stocks, bonuses, fancy penthouses and luxury cars - but without food we are all screwed.

Not many farmers out there making a lot of money. People want cheap food and they don't what it costs to raise it.

How does one farm pelicans? Is it difficult? Would I need a lot of room?

I've got a small, pelican ranch; about 200 head.

Kids love 'em more than alpacas.

There are certain crops in high demand.

Does Swedish law allow such farming, Markus?

I got scammed. Bought 10 pelicans to breed on the internet and they didn't.

I called and told my vet. He said he'd never heard of anyone breeding pelicans on the internet and asked how it was done. I explained my ambiguous sentence structure to him and he understood.

He drove over to my house to take a look at the birds. My vet's a devoted ornitheologist. He literally worships birds.

He took one look at my birds and said "You've been scammed. These birds can't breed". I asked why the heck not. He said they weren't pelicans, they were pelican'ts.

So I planted them in my garden.

None came up.

I guess you could say I am a "berry farmer" since I have about 10 acres in blueberries. If it gets worse, going to get a couple of cows and plant some corn. May build a new fence while I'm at it.

I would not reccomend buying your starter birds on the internet unless you're an ornitheologist or know a heck of a lot about birds (ask me how I know).

Speedracing944 lives on a hobby farm.

And commodity prices have been through the roof the past few years. Corn was up because of ethanol, and the price of soy and wheat had to rise to persuade farmers to grow those too. The local farmers are doing quite well.

i generally have a big enough garden for me to have fresh veggies for us the whole summer/fall. I grow 7-10 different tomatoes as well..nothin better than a jersey tomato (well maybe a san marzano) fresh of the vine for a salad..or pepers that get grilled in 2 minutes from the picking. Same with corn

Stijn, it always is, depending on where you are

The farm the horses are on is worth about $200K per acre. It's mostly trees, but there is a lot of pasture also. The other piece of land is worth around $120K per acre (maybe a few tens of K more). It's currently crop-leased out. I think the guy grows 150 acres of corn, or maybe a mix of corn and soy beans.

Farming is definitely not a bad way of life. If I ever have em, I'd love to raise my kids on a farm.

As a kid I grew up on a farm owned by my Mom. She had sheep and cattle. In New Zealand the sheep and cattle are grass feed all year round with no barns or stables for them. I believe in the US the cattle are grain fed during the winter.

She made quite alot of money off the farm but she was using it as a trading base with A LOT of buying and selling of stock. Some cattle were around for a few days some, around for a month.

Traditional farming is a thankless task in this country with zero subsidies, quite unlike the US and Europe, although farming brings in most of NZ's money from other countries.

My FIL is, has 2700 acres of corn and soy in Iowa - times they be good right now but it wasn't always.

Farm land is fetching $7000+/acre - I've told him to cash out and move down south to be near us but he loves the work more than the money. 17mil vs. a 7day/wk, 52wk/yr thankless, dangeriddled job. Go figuer!
