how do you tell someone that they stink?

holy craap!

some idiot... our office person. on light duty from maintenence. he has a ZZtop beard, and is the first person you see when you walk into my office...oil under the fingernails...ewww.

anyways. this is starting the second week of body reekness. not only does he smells like he doesnt shower, he smells like he rebuilds holley carbs when he wakes up. BO + gasoline smell. i am not the boss, so i just crack my office window and leave the door closed. but how would you tell someone? have you ever had to?

i am having a wierd work week.

Oh Haha 10-27-2008 02:14 PM

Bi@#$, you stink!!!!!!!

just kidding, obviously. He might be a raving pyscho. I would let the HR dept. know if you have one. They should deal with him in a respectful but forceful manner.

stomachmonkey 10-27-2008 02:19 PM

Yeah, HR.

911boost 10-27-2008 02:25 PM

Yeah, let HR handle it.

On a similar note, I got a call from a customer about 8 years ago saying I needed to come in. I showed up, and the customer, a very nice lady, said one of our female employees had an odor problem. I said "ok", and which point the customer pointed "downstairs" and said that was where the smell was coming eminating.

Yeeeeeeahhhhh, that was a fun one to solve.

Had an engineer from India working for us. Went out with him and bought cologne. He understood.

Tell me about it, a large number of people I work with are from India, and they don't bathe much. Granted I know some that are clean, but most of the time you gotta just hold your breath in the halls.

carambola 10-27-2008 02:40 PM

screw it, be a man and tell him

masraum 10-27-2008 02:42 PM

HR

When I was bartending at topless bars, a particular dancer developed a problem for about two weeks until a manager had to tell her. No HR in a tittie bar.

I've worked with several folks over the years with insufficient personal hygiene. It sucks.

"Hey bud, 'ya gotta minute? Yeah, I know we don't know each other. You're about to hear from HR about an embarassing issue and you'll probably be glad we don'ty know each other that after I tell you this. Okay, so there's no way to say this nice so I'll just tell you. You've got a SERIOUS B.O. issue dude and people in the office are going to HR about it.
Plus they say you smell like you've got gasoline on your hands. Look, do whatever you need to do about it, but I'm just trying to tell you like I'd want to hear about it....if I had the problem. Good luck"

Yeah, I am interested about that too. I got an indian student who reeks, and I`d like to do something about it. It is like, when he comes in my office at 2 pm, I can smell it till 5 pm. Not cool.

hose him down with air freshener

walk in with two giant cans - each one in a gun-slinger type holster -- whip 'em out and have at it

if he takes them away, reach into your socks and pull out a small derringer type can

One of the guys I see frequently has a BO problem. He's a long time Porsche guy and we get along pretty well. In his case, it's his meds more than anything else, but he can can pretty bad on a warm day just pittin' out. I just refuse to go inside anywhere with him and won't take him to events in my car. He shows up on his own. He's married, so I figure if she can stand him, so can I.

rammstein 10-27-2008 03:51 PM

In my engineering days, I dealt with this a lot. HR people suck. Sure, here and there I will encounter a good HR person, but for the most part they are worthless bags of worthlessness who do nothing but collect a paycheck and organize a picnic once a year.

HR has a responsibility to set and enforce cleanliness standards in the officeplace. I assume you work in America, and in America it is part of our culture to shower daily. I used to work with people who probably showered quarterly. It was simply unbearable.

I wouldn't go work at a company in India and eat steak at lunch or wear a leather jacket.

Tell HR to do their job.

anonymous gift basket with soap, deodorant, cologne, and a cookie. we did it for a stinky teacher a long time ago, and it worked.

I've been having a ****ty month. I got hurt at work and now I feel like a poor employee since HR took me out of my maintenance shop, and put me in an office. To make things worse, the van at the orphanage where i volunteer in the scullery to help feed the children, slung a rod, and I have spent all my spare cash and time getting my hands greasy trying to fix-it for them. Also, I have been having issues with my Harley. Every morning, I have to tickle the carbs to get the old thing running. I don't know how I'll get to work if the Hog breaks down, since I let orphanage use my car until I get the van running. To make things worse, this little prick a work has started busting my balls. All he does every day is set in his office with the door shut and stare out his open window. I'd love to spit some Beechnut in that dude's eye! We need get rid of 3 quarters of the over paid office staff, and we could use that money to start turning a profit.
