second chance flushed in 2 days
The new hire completed rehab about 6 months ago. Today, the newbie was found hooked to a syringe in a bathroom. I'd say lucky to be alive if I thought that was the case...instead I'd have to say that now, the odds of an eventual suicide are much greater than 50/50...man, oh man.

clearly true.
I feel bad for green-lighting this hire...like I'm more than a little responsible for the stain it will be on my department and place of work for the past 10 years. The drug this person was using in the past and now doesn't turn up on urine tox. screens and is readily available in large quantities. As such, I can't see that there was anything other than a clear plan to use this drug again and as much as possible. This person went missing for an hour on Monday (day 1) after telling me that they needed to make a few phone calls during lunch...AWOL again on day 2 when found in a bathroom that was locked for over an hour. I didn't have a chance to know this person at all. This seems so clearly planned that I don't really feel bad for them...more so the people I work with. They deserved better. I'll apologize a lot today. |

I had to fire a five year employee a while back. Don't feel bad, but it doesn't make me want to try again.

The guy was shooting up with Propofol? Aside from being somewhat dangerous, what's the point of shooting up if you can't remember the experience?
edit: Just asked an anesthesiologist. Apparently some people have a euphoria with Propofol. I guess that might be if you use a low enough dose so as not to put yourself fully to sleep (which is how it's usually used in the hospital--during induction of anesthesia and for sedation). Apparently there was an article written up in one of the anesthesia journals about how an anesthesiologist was found to be using it in his coffee. He'd use it in the place of creamer (Propofol is a white liquid).

Coworkers should understand... I'm betting they will see you as compassionate and caring, and the user as the bonehead. If he had been a meth head and had come in and burned the place down so everyone was out of a job, you'd probably encounter some resentment... but as it stands, you shouldn't have any backbiting, IMO.
