How'd he do this????

From a retired pilot friend...ex USAF fighter pilot, who said he watched it over and over and can't figure it out...lost a wing & landed safely??? WOW!

Hate to say it, but I'm pretty sure that's not real. Looks a lot like an R/C game I saw recently.

-You were kidding, right?

You must not have watched the video...pretty hard to fake this one.

MT930 10-29-2008 05:38 PM

Umm sure

Aerkuld 10-29-2008 05:38 PM

My guess is that those little aerobatic planes have a huge amount of power for their weight and that he was basically flying it on the prop to keep it in the air and maneuvering using the prop wash over the tail surfaces.
Just a guess, I've never piloted anything with a wingspan greater than 6 feet...

slodave 10-29-2008 05:38 PM

Yeah, something not right with the video. How come no gas spray as the wing separated? the bounce on landing looks weird as well.

Paul K 10-29-2008 05:41 PM

I just did some research. One pilots discussion board has guys arguing like crazy whether or not it's possible (they all seem to agree it is fake) but apparently it was created by the KillaThrill sports apparel company.

Still cool to watch- thanks for posting.

krichard 10-29-2008 05:42 PM

fake, the plane that lands with one wing is an rc plane.

porsche4life 10-29-2008 05:44 PM

I have seen an r/c landing that looks like that. think it was a thread on here actually.

slodave 10-29-2008 05:46 PM

It is possible with an RC plane. I had a similar incident a number of years ago with my glider. One of the old guys flew his lead weight of a plane right through my wing tip, severing about 3.5 ft. of wing tip. my glider was about a month old at the time. Somehow, I was able to get it to spin down to the ground and at the right moment, moved the sticks on the radio just right and glider made a safe but jarring landing.

tcar 10-29-2008 05:48 PM

The plane is on the KillaThrill site - with both wings.

Acrobatic planes don't carry fuel in the wings. They're like 914's, weight is in the center.

And if an R/C plane can do it, a real acro plane can do it.

But it has happened before, so it is possible.

Israeli jet F15 fighter lost an entire wing, flew back and landed on afterburner. Needed the extra power to fly. I'll try to find the link. It's true.

Here's the link:

That DID actually happen, absolutely.

Its a video game or computer animation. Its not hard to fake anything anymore.

For the record, that is certainly possible with and RC plane. It wouldn't look that pretty, but you could get it down. Massive power to weight ratio.

TerryH 10-29-2008 05:52 PM

It would almost seem possible, if someone could practice on a simulator, but to do it perfectly like that on, what has to be one shot in a million, is too amazing to be true. Great clip tho.

cstreit 10-29-2008 06:57 PM

I dunno... Actually watching it up untill the point were the pilot got out I saw it as an r/c place because it acted just like one, spent many hours flying them and the flight characteristics rang a bell.

A few things that bother me about this.

1. Inertia takes a back seat: The bounce was very fast up and down. Looked exactly like a hard landing in an r/c plane and nothing like one in a real aircraft. When the wing came off it flitted away like something VERY lightweight.

2. The convenient fuzzing and shaking of the video during the times immediately after the landing. THe video is crisp and always in focus during the moments right up to the landing. Then when you're leading in the transition from the r/c to the real plane it starts losing focus. Additionally the "shaking" of the camera as the plane is taxiing is way to fast and looks computer generated. These "events" would cover up the fact that an r/c plane is rolling on grass and bouncing a lot more than a real plane would AND that they transitioned from a model to life size.

3. The clincher. The wheel nacelles are silver with a black stripe on the top for the entire video right up untill the transition from r/c to real. Then they are solid flat black.

cstreit 10-29-2008 07:01 PM

Oh... and the REAL clincher. A little googling shows this was a viral video ad campaign for KillaThrill clothing.

Eric Coffey 10-29-2008 07:02 PM

The video in the OP is an obvious fake. And, an obvious/lame attempt at a viral video for promoting "killa Thrill" (whatever that is).

EDIT: HA, Chris beat me by a minute...

berettafan 10-29-2008 07:04 PM

watched a video of a LARGE scale RC plane land with 1 wing. amazing stuff.

i'm not a pilot but that video surely looked like an RC plane to me as well.

Aerkuld 10-29-2008 07:14 PM

I saw an aerobatic plane similar to that doing some incredible moves (albeit with both wings) at the Chino airshow a few years ago. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes I wouldn't have thought it possible. He would do a VERY slow pass low and level. In the middle of the pass he would flip the plane nose up 90 degrees seemingly on the spot so the maneuver was done faster than the plane was flying (if that makes any sense?). It looked as though the plane should have just stalled out as it was then travelling almost horizontally but bottom first. He would then just power it up vertical. The only way I could think that this could be done was by blowing lots of air over the control surfaces using the prop and then directing the air with the control surfaces almost like vectored thrust. It just looked physically impossible.

Looking at the video I wouldn't have thought it was a very high G maneuver when the wing 'fell' off. I suspect it might be fiddled with but I would also think that it might be possible with a lot of skill and a lot more luck.

Schumi 10-29-2008 07:55 PM

I seriously can't believe you all think this is real. I know nothing about planes. But I do know a thing or two about CGI and THAT my friends is all computer generated. The beginning is VERY convincing but the end is too clean, the textures and colors are too clean and pristine to be a real video.... it is rendered 3D video.

yes, maybe something like that is possible... but that video is not a real video of it happening.

Gogar 10-29-2008 08:12 PM

+1. The first 10 or 11 seconds are real. I have no idea if it's actually possible, but it sure would be hard to practice a move like that!
