new camera

Wasn't going to do it, but red dot dementia got the better of me. New Leica D-Lux4 (cousin of Panasonic LX-3). You pay a premium, but do get better raw software, nicer outer case and menus, and a 3 year warranty. Just took a few quick snaps tonight

2nd shot of the camera, outdoors at Italian Bike Night (ignore the two BMWs in the foreground ;) ).

Low light performance appears to be excellent. These were jpgs straight out of the camera with just a touch of exposure increase. Going to be a fun camera to shoot with as I love available light and this thing handles it well.

Ceeerist. The low light performance.....wow. I bow down to your pixels sir. Thats a fine looking cat too.

Great looking photos Todd. I just bought a Nikon D90 yesterday.....David

nostatic 10-30-2008 10:21 AM

The D90 looks like a *great* camera. I pulled out my old D70 and was reminded how good Nikon does certain things.

Here is another low light example. This is indoors at my local coffee place, iso 100 (!), f2, 1/80s. A compact should not be able to drop down to iso 100 under these conditions...

That's amazing performance.

The cropped cat picture showing green eyes is really good.

Moses 10-30-2008 11:13 AM

You took those with this? Amazing.

What did you decide to do with your old camera?

Probably gave it as a gift.

Well, you aren't her. :D

I did give it to her, but not as a bday present. She was extremely happy with it. Look at it this way. I could have easily sold the camera for $500. Instead I gave it to her, and she was wanting to borrow it anyway to shoot some of her work. Now she's thrilled. But then again she isn't a materialistic beotch...

I've enjoyed ditching (almost all) smilies and green text.

I actually didn't think it was tacky even when proposed as a b'day gift, but that's just me. I couldn't help resurrecting the feeling from the old thread, tongue in cheek.

And you are damn lucky I'm not her. I'm not very cute.

Incredible pics.

Stupid question: what would you get if you only had $300?

Save up until I had $450 and get the Panasonic LX-3 (essentially the same camera as the Leica).

But it really depends on what/how you shoot. I love shooting without a flash often in low-light situations. I also want as fast and crisp a lens as possible, want to shoot raw, and can live with a relatively short throw (this is 24-60mm). There are other cameras that are more versatile and do other things better.

Steve Carlton 10-30-2008 01:18 PM

Could you post a shot taken at ISO 400, 800, and 1600?

nostatic 10-30-2008 01:26 PM

not my shot, but this is iso 1600

Steve Carlton 10-30-2008 01:33 PM

Impressive. I doubt my Ricoh would do that well at ISO 400. Plus its max aperture is not quite as good at f/2.5.
