Las Vegas Lights
Just got back from Vegas and I was wondering about the lights I could see in the distance from my hotel at night. I was staying at the Wynn, my room was I believe on the back side. I could see the Hilton to the left. During the day when i looked out my window, I could see the suburbs that eventually made their way to the mountains. At night, that whole area (suburbia) seems to sparkle. What is the deal? If it is suburbia, don't people turn their lights off at night? Just never seen anything like that before.
My Vegas experience, definitely more fun when you have a boat load of money which unfortunately I do not qualify. I did eat well on the company and played at circus circus a couple nights. A dump but affordable. I guess it did have bit more charm than the Wynn. I did walk the strip which was full of energy. Wasn't necessarily my thing but I can see how people do love it out there. Glad i saw it. |
I asked the same question once in Vegas.
Here's what I was told. Most climates have significant water vapour in the air. When you look through such air lights appear muted and stable. Desert air is dry, but contains significant amounts of dust which refracts the light and makes it appear too flicker. Lights (including stars) also appear bigger and brighter in the desert for the same reason. |

Strange, I couldn't sleep either. I would go to bed at night thinking I would blow off my first two classes (because it was 2:30). I would wake up at 6:00AM full of energy. I got up and exercised one morning. Considering I haven't been able to do that in 20 years, something is up. Someone said something about enriched oxygen being pumped into the rooms. Myth, who knows but I never really needed sleep until I got home. I guess I now know what Superman would feel like going back to his home planet. I am suddenly old again.
One night I took off from drinking and the lights still blinked so I am cancelling out the alcohol effect. I ate well in Vegas. Some Italian place at the Wynn, Capital Grill and Lorey's Steakhouse (not sure I spelled it correctly). A bit dumpy compared to capital grill but the food was much better I thought. Anyhow, thanks for answering my question. |
David,
That was just your jet lag taking over,, you stayed up late because you were excited and got up early because your internal clock was still on east coast time.. Todd |
