AT&T network down in L.A. and other rants

Argh! Tried to make a few calls and nothing. Either "call failed" or "network busy"... This sucks, it's been down for about an hour...

Before I knew it was a network issue, I thought it was my phone... It does do weird things from time to time - enough to piss me off. Soooo, After dialing a number 20 times and finally get through, I get a bit irritated, then I need to make another call and nothing. Full bars, go upstairs, where I can overlook the Valley, still nothing...

In a momentary lapse of reason, I smack the phone on my coffee table... Whoops, now the screen is white and the time until call failure picks up. I wasn't looking to upgrade to an iPhone today, bit it was in the plans.... Off to the store - Guy tells me the network is down - great I just broke my phone and it was an ATT issue. Oh well, while I'm here, I guess we should talk iPhone - I'm sorry, you are not eligible for an upgrade. WTF? I have never been eligible for a phone upgrade! I have been a loyal ATT/Cingular/Pac Bell customer for years.

Dammit! I want my iPhone and I don't want to pay full retail for it!

I'm .

End of post, but I will still be "ranting" around my house. Maybe I'll break more stuff!

masraum 11-06-2008 07:10 PM

why aren't you eligible?

Wickd89 11-06-2008 07:14 PM

Switch to T-Mobile and get a G1 google phone or ~179+plan..
(I happen to work or them....;-)

I don't know, my current contract? He said I was eligible in January. We'll see about that.

I may threaten ATT with jumping ship. I'm sure they will then see the day of light and come pleading to me. Yeah, right.

Apply just a little pressure and they will most certainly allow you to upgrade early. I've done that about 3 times in as many years, as I have 5 lines on my account.

slodave 11-07-2008 03:38 PM

I'm pissed. They won't let me upgrade to an iPhone. Two months left in my contract and they won't work with me. Great going ATT! Way to work ith your existing long term customers. Not only do I have cell service through them, also DSL and land line. I'm about ready to cancel all my services - and would if it wasn't such a pain to get new services.

Luis, does the Google phone have RDP and SSH apps? If so, I really may consider canceling all of my ATT services.

ATT will extend any phone offer to me, except the iPhone.

Hi Dave,
Possibly. I design the wireless side and . The specific "android apps" are beyond me but here are some possible links that could provide more info:

It is really powerful and for a programmer, it is probably a dream....:)

SSH, yes. RDP, not yet.

Love my iphone, hate AT&T.

Absolutely horrible. I sent my wife a text message from the grocery store the other night. No response. I come home from the store, and put the grocerys away. 'Ding!' it was my wifes phone, with my text message coming in, 30 minutes later. WTF?

The thing drops calls all the time. T-mobiles network was lightyears ahead.

Good to know, that helps for my servers. SSH is a convenience, RDP would be a necessity for me.

Dave,

Been with AT&T for 15 years. Have come close to defecting around 20 times for issues similar to yours.

I'm worth around ~$3k a year for cell service to them so they have always made it right.

However when it comes to the iPhone contracts there is pretty much no wiggle room.

Until the exclusive is up they are not budging on anything.

Yeah, hated AT&T in NY, literally could not make a call longer than 1 1/2 minutes before it dropped. Every conversation required 3 separate calls.

Been in TX for a little over a year. 2 maybe 3 dropped calls in that time and i'm not even sure they were on my end.

Yeah, Customer relations was willing bend over backwards - just not with the iPhone.

I haven't really had any real issues with the service. My Razr is still working, despite the coffee table incident, but I did damage the small LCD display. It should last two more months.

Noah930 11-09-2008 09:01 PM

So with a broken screen, how are you texting?

How would you know? You're always asleep! :p

It's the little LCD on the outside of the Razr that is busted, not cracked, but some pixel damage...

gprsh924 11-10-2008 05:27 AM

The razrs are resilient...mine survived a ride with me on my waverunner and came back working 100% after a few days. I keep it around now as a backup in case I do something stupid and break my blackberry.
