Blatant Self-Promotion Thread – Pelican Networking

The post by kach22i sparked a thought.

Let’s help each other & do some semi-public networking. I am sure that many of us are staring down the barrel of an economic downturn, recession, depression or whatever the media label it. Times will get tough & many of us will suffer in varying degrees. I thought it might be a reasonable idea to have a Blatant Self-Promotion thread, so whenever possible we all can direct our business to a fellow Pelican, because . . . well . . . why not? We have at least that one thing in common. The only possible other thing, is that we all buy from Pelican Parts. Wayne conceived & built this playpen/free resource center & he deserves our business. He has approved this thread (in principle) btw.

For those of you aware of Linkedin, you should know that Pelican Parts has a group at Pelican Group which can help too. We have Stijn - svandamme to thank for organizing it. To join see Joining Linkedin

So tell us about your business or what you do & who you work for. Or if you are looking, what can you bring to the table & where can you work etc? Briefly.
Who is your customer? Who can you service/help/benefit? Briefly.
How can someone reach you? Website? Email? Phone? If a public forum makes you queasy tell us at least one way to contact you.
Post a single (1, one, uno, ein, un - as in alone) product picture/ad/other blatant self-promotional image.

So a few rules . . .

No promotion or even mention of a product or service that is competitive with Pelican Parts. As always a mod will delete your post if you break this cardinal rule.

You must be a Pelican customer. That’s the only way it is fair to Wayne that we blatantly self-promote on a forum that he pays for. Think of it this way: the business that you throw Pelican’s way is the cost of this free ad on PPOT. Honor system here, but we will know & we will shun you. No one post wonders please - your post will evaporate.

Be brief. I can index it all to this post if it works. Or this thread can die in the usual manner if not.

Ian

Programming & systems geek here. I don't make things look pretty, I do back end stuff and generate things that a graphics designer can make pretty, or take a design from a designer and apply it to my output. Things I've done include custom scheduling via a web interface for gym/trainer sessions, calendars with different event categories, form to email scripts (released under GPL), form to database scripts, etc. For a fellow Pelican I've set up a "expensive toy/real esate" system - planes, boats, real estate, cars, searchable, with video content uploaded and displayed (Jim - did this ever go live and get data put in?) I've also done domain hosting (DNS, email, web sites), small office network setups, email/calendaring systems, file/printer sharing systems, and paperless fax systems. In fact, one of the fax systems I've done for a local insurance agent has been in operation for 4 years now, averaging 50,000 faxes in and out per year, with no issues that weren't power or phone line related (sorry, I can't help it if you loose power during a hurricane or you have too many people calling causing a busy signal). I work with Free software - all Linux based and GPL licensed. I don't do limits on number of client systems connected, etc.

This certainly cannot hurt right?

I am a commercial real estate broker. I typically work with the buy side of the equation, i.e. investors looking to buy or tenants looking to lease space.

While I am based in the Silicon Valley, I do have contacts and can manage the process across the country.

My services are paid for by the current landlord of the building, similar to a real estate agent helping you buy a home.

You post this in a forum that's pretty much 98% trafficked by guys. That on purpose, big guy? ;)

Good call, Ian. Aside from the stated intent, it's also nice to know a little more about other Pelicans.

Business: Integration Engineer. That's the short title, but doesn't really mean anything. I spent 9 years as an Officer in Submarines. When I got out, I was connected by a friend with a group of people who build the submarine simulators (almost) predominantly in use by the fleet. An "integrator," in this context, is a guy who puts together disparate bits of hardware and software to make a consolidated product. That means that there's a lot of project management, a lot of working with incredibly motivated developers. Leading a team of developers is akin, in many ways, to herding cats.

Customers: The US Submarine Force, mostly. There are others, but we mostly build for Submariners.

Territory: We are headquartered in DC and RI, but we deliver to all of the submarine bases.

Skill set: Project management, risk management, ability to coordinate disparate teams of developers towards a common goal. Various computer skills.

Aspirations: I love what I do, but the money is only mediocre. I don't want to be wealthy, mind you, but I'd like to be comfortable enough that when I bring home my 3rd Porsche, my wife doesn't complain about the clutter in the garage. :)

Michael O'Neal - Whirledmedia (Web, print, and product design)

Website: http://www.whirledmedia.com

Description: Web & Print design and development. I have been the creative director of a fortune 500 company, the senior web producer of design agencies, and been independent for most of the "new millennium".

I can manage a huge, cutting edge web project worth 6 figures and above, or do a small "mom and pop" site, branding, etc. for $3k. I am not the cheapest out there at $75/hr, but my services and skill level are that of a typical design agency that would charge $120-$150/hr. So, as my tagline says, I'm "Agency Quality without Agency Pricing".

I love to brand new companies (Logo, letterhead, business cards, website) and redesign and market current companies. eCommerce, blogs, marketing ideas...all things I love to do.

I've gotten a couple clients from Pelican, and would be happy to chat with you about your project!

Just like the card says... I do small business bookkeeping, QuickBooks set-up and training. I'm a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor who's been using QuickBooks for around 14 years. I'm no accountant or CPA, but still know a fair amount of accounting.

I have quite a few clients I work for that I rarely see... one I've never even met! Remote access is a wonderful thing. My clients range is size from sole proprietors with $60K in sales all the way up to a couple of companies with >$5 million in sales.

I just work for my dad but he might be of help to yall so I will post here.
Company: Johnson Signs Inc., Arapaho, Ok.
We prefer small graphics(nothing that is readily available or that Wayne sells not worth our time) banner and custom license plates and showboards. All of that stuff he would be willing to ship.
But we also do Highway signs and High rise signs, Electric, unlight, neon, LED, and Message Centers. My Dad built this business from the ground up and has had several employees but at the moment he has my mom to do the office work and me and my uncle help him part time. I am a student and my uncle is a Firefighter. If you want any examples let me know and I will post pics. I have some neat one off stuff for my car.

That's the "official" PPOT Linkedin group, approved by Wayne himself
i set it up, and i manage membership, but it's Wayne's

i only approve PP Board members, and only after i can verifiy that membership via a PM on the Board here.
I do reject other requests, as there are a bunch of folks who try to join the group just to get into the PPOT linkedin network

So i cannot stress out enough, if you want IN, send a PM via the board, along with the request via Linkedin...
