TV program rant

Poker tourneys? C'mon. What could be more boring?

Think about it. A group of people sitting around playing cards?
Why is that even on TV?

What shows do you think shouldn't be on?

Any kind of "reality" shows or my personal favorite POS wheel of fortune. OMG, how dumb do ya have to be? the puzzle reads: As American as apple pi_ And the contestant asks, "Can I have a G, Pat?"

I'd replace the poker with top level pool tourneys...

+1

I can't fathom it. Whats next?

"And now, some quality video of a guy raking leaves. Just look at him go!"

World series of poker final table plays this week. Tuesday, I think. First place is around $8,000,000. All of the nine contestants left are winning over a mil each. Got my DVR set up.

There is much worse crap on TV. Wife made sit through a reality show called "wife swap?" where two disfunctional families trade mom/wives. This is why my wife has her own tv and dvr. I can't watch "home makeover" 5 days a week either. It seems if a network gets an audience for a show, they run the show every day of the week.

Rot 911 11-10-2008 05:51 AM

Reality shows were the cause of me pretty much giving up on television. And the election commercials didn't help much. Now it is the ocassional DVD.

David 11-10-2008 06:03 AM

At least when my wife watches reality TV I don't get suckered into them so I can spend more time in the garage :D

cstreit 11-10-2008 07:26 AM

I watch them... You can't learn much from the edited content, but I guess you have to be in to the game...

dhoward 11-10-2008 07:30 AM

What ever happened to real poker?
I cannot get into this Texas Hold'em deal...

I'll tell you what's more boring. A guy I worked with used to watch this. Every Monday morning he would sit in my office and give me a detailed rundown of what took place on this show. As he and I were the "earlybirds", we were in about 2 hours before anyone else and he used most of that time with the poker recap. I swear, I had to struggle to stay awake. It was brutal.

JavaBrewer 11-10-2008 07:39 AM

Fishing is right up there in the boring TV department. Golf can be too.

What's with all the CSI like shows these days?

Gogar 11-10-2008 07:42 AM

Golf is boring too, but something about having Golf on the TV relaxes me. Like . . . . if you're watching Golf on TV, you must not be very busy.

trekkor 11-10-2008 07:47 AM

Wow! Poker show recap? Yeah, that's worse. :D

I watch a few poker tournaments on TV every now and then. Final tables are cool to watch.

If you want to be disgusted by television, my I recommend sitting through an episode of "The Hills" on MTV.

Try it.

MT930 11-10-2008 09:18 AM

TV is a vast waste land!! The fact some Kid's are watching it is disturbing.

Gogar Golf is boring too, but something about having Golf on the TV relaxes me. Like . . . . if you're watching Golf on TV, you must not be very busy.

I agree!! I don't even golf, but it really mellows me out.

The crap on TV is a very sad commentary on what the public is asking for.

My kid's don't even like it. They rode the horse till after dark last night.

Speed chanel sucks most of the time. (Not A NASCAR Fan)

We watch Discovery and History chanel 95% of the time or no TV.

i canceled my cable 19 years ago

on network tv, the reality shows are terrible. nothing but PBS or dvds for me

Porsche-O-Phile 11-10-2008 05:06 PM

The late George Carlin summed it up best:

"Watching golf on TV is about as exciting as watching flies f*ck".

Rusty Heap 11-10-2008 05:08 PM

There is this amazing device called an on/off switch............

Dave L 11-10-2008 05:48 PM

TV is background noise for me for the most part. As I type this some inane "home improvement" show is on. I just finished watching Top Gear which I watch intently and Canada Worst Driver is on in 20 minutes. I also watch the Holmes on Homes, Aussie Top Gear and Fifth Gear but beyond that I really cant think of many shows that I have to see. Whats most interesting is that a lot of the "content" I watch is downloaded.

I cant watch golf or any other sports on TV. I would rather play. I couldnt imagine watching Poker.

BGCarrera32 11-10-2008 07:06 PM

I still enjoy "Cops". I always feel better about myself after watching the cops bring the beat down on some drunk doper wife beater jerk.

On off switch...how quaint :p

It's a power/standby soft touch OLED pad! No one actually uses "switches" anymore :p

TerryH 11-11-2008 07:21 PM

22 year old Dane won $9.1M and became youngest WSOP champ ever... and I enjoyed watching the entire two hour final table show. ;)

trekkor 11-11-2008 07:27 PM

Why? ;)

Sports is the only reality tv I enjoy. I know.... poker isn't a sport, but it does take cunning, guile, nerves of steel, math skills, and the ability to concentrate for hours on end.

Like NASCAR, baseball, bowling, golf, billiards, darts, mudwrestling.. (okay that last one is a stretch) the more you know about the game, the more there is to enjoy and appreciate.

nostatic 11-11-2008 08:07 PM

I don't watch much TV beyond a few tivo'd shows like Good Eats and Iron Chef, but I will cop to watching poker from time to time, especially if I'm traveling and can't get to sleep in my hotel room (which is most always). Poker is all about psychology, and as long as the announcers mostly keep their mouth shut, it is fascinating to watch the subtle stuff that goes on at the table. It's like a focused social experiment :D

trekkor 11-11-2008 08:08 PM

I've played LOTS of poker. Just can't watch.

I'm glad you enjoy watching. :)

Television happened to real poker.

Texas hold'em makes for better television.

I played Texas Hold'em

trekkor 11-12-2008 10:59 PM

I caught a few minutes... It choked...

Hard.

what about that show where people get tattoos? THATS exciting.
or another "top model" show or cooking show, that what this country needs. you ever notice they all have their token "gay guy", not that there's anything wrong with that.
i was hoping this was to complain about all those "mini comercials" they put at the bottom of the screens. they seem to get bigger and bigger. yeah, i got issues:D

johnco 11-13-2008 08:08 AM

had a strange but fun dream the other night where a friend and myself were traveling the world to watch weird games. reality tv games type games.. a couple I can remember were bullfighting on ice, handgrenade hot potatoe, lawn dart dodge ball, lawn dart badminton, mine field hopscotch, hold my beer and watch this... this might even be a little too weird for Japanese tv.
