Traveling Route 66 after Christmas

My 12 y.o. son and I have been wanting to make a Route 66 pilgrimage for some time now.

Business being what it is, I can take time off between Christmas and January 2nd. We would be going from LA as far east as we have time for. Maybe to Chicago, but at the pace I'd like to take, maybe only to Amarillo.

What should I expect for weather? Too cold, or worth it? Is the Grand Canyon worth seeing in the winter?

(BTW - we were first going to take the 911 (and the Targa doesn't leak but...), then thought about towing a little Teardrop, but now I've found a diesel Sprinter for rent on the cheap, so I think we'll be staying in out of the way campgrounds along the route.)

Any advice would be appreciated.

I'd love to see the Grand canyon in the winter.

There is a train you can take from Williams.

Well, if you do make it to Illinois, you're welcome to stop in Bloomington for beers. (Route 66 runs through town.)

I've lived on both ends of Route 66.

I used to live off of Foothill Blvd in La Verne...

I would have gone to Bonita if I'd stuck around. I was still at Allen Avenue Elementary School when I moved.

I did go to high school at Waubonsie Valley in Aurora, IL.

Which is kind of funny because...

Michael Myers did Wayne's World, which took place in Aurora, IL.

In Wayne's World II, he goes into the church from The Graduate, which is in La Verne, CA, and across the street from Bonita High School.

What a small world.

I am really looking forward to this trip with my son. We are leaving my wife and 2 daughter home (the girls are 17 and 15 and would NOT enjoy the ride).

We have been talking about this for some time, and since we are shutting down for that week, I just don't know when we'll get a better chance. I am kinda surprised he's as up for it as he is, but I'm glad nonetheless. We are planning on stopping at all the odd spots along the way, so I don't know how far we'll get. GC, Petrified Forest, Santa Fe, Stuckeys, Cadillac Ranch - you know what I mean.

But I am a little worried about the weather. In So Cal, that time of year is spectacular. Brisk, but still int he 70's during the day. Don't know about points east though...

zombees live out there on the mother road!

our hunt area has route 66 going right thru it!

lots of wrecked vehicles(parts), graves(yep back then they buried them where they fell), lots of markings on trees/rocks etc.

outstanding place for a quality metal detector(garrett).

grande canon is muy bueno cool in the winter as is all of northern az. unless of course you on a 10 day elk hunt with 3 bull tags...............then its downright freeeking COLD! can we say EXPOSED!

The Grand Canyon is stunning in the winter ! If I had a scanner available I would post some pics of it in winter that I took back in 1994. I have been there both in winter and in the summer....winter wins, hands down !

Ya there is lots to see. I have made it as far as tucumcari, NM. You have to make it that far. If you have time come on in to OK. We have lots and lots to see. I live in Clinton and and we have a National Rt.66 Museum in town that is rather nice. There are a few other neat things around too, Lucille's is an old gas station that has been a landmark for years. There is now a steakhouse built to mimmick it.

Watch out for the Ghost light. I've run RT.66 several times in Cristine, always something new to see. Enjoy the journey with your son.

Once you get out of CA, a very good chance.

If you're gonna take time for a side trip to see Grand Canyon, try to also build in enough time to see Monument Valley... not too far... build in one extra day for it and stay at Goulding's Lodge. We were more wowed by Monument Valley than Grand Canyon... there's something about it that isn't easy to put into words.

It's eerie... I half expected to see a T-Rex. Or John Wayne.

Meteor Crater (just east of Flagstaff) would probably be a major hit with your son, too.

Have a Frito Pie at the Route 66 Diner in Albuquerque.

On Central Avenue (Route 66) near I-25.

And on the way to Grand Canyon... see the Meteor Crater near Flagstaff. Amazing.

Weather last year

We did the Polar Express in Williams AZ last year. Mid December, right off the 66. It was snowing and added to the awesome experience. I think the snow was not that common, as everyone was really excited about it.

Pm me and i will give you my cell if you do happen to make it in to Ok. we can go grab a burger/steak at the place I mentioned. I also know of several nice RV parks in the area. I would be more than happy to give you weather info once you are in the area. Snow in OK is impossible to predict but a "blizzard" for us is like 8in atmost. Just bring a warm coat b/c it can be bloody cold and windy round here.

A group of us just did the Grand Canyon and Route 66 from Williams to Kingman as part of our drive out to Cali. I recomend overnighting at El Tovar, sunset and sunrise is spectacular.

Here are some photos.

Have a great trip, La Ditch in winter is fabulous.
