What is a "normal" number of text messages for a 20-something to send each month?

I'm 38 and new to texting.

It appears my 20-something colleagues grew up text messaging as a part of their daily life, and they do it quite a bit more than I do. I heard a number one guy sent in a month that surprised me.

I think I probably send 20 texts a month. What do you think is the average for the younger crowd?

Pazuzu 11-13-2008 08:40 AM

You send 20 more texts a month than I've sent in my life.

But, based on how often I've seen younger people text in a 15 minute bus trip, or the ratio of kids texting while DRIVING, I'd say that they average about 620 texts a week. Maybe more :p

BReif61 11-13-2008 08:43 AM

My last bill had ~1400 on it. I'm 22, and texts are probably the main form of communication between my friends and I, simply due to different schedules.

And so you dont' freak out; I have unlimited.

The one guy I knew back at college would regularly hit 5000+ between him and his girlfriend.

Tim Walsh 11-13-2008 08:53 AM

receiving about 500/month
sending: about 100/month

Most of mine are to my wife who's part of the deaf community(all they do is text) and most of the incoming are automated messages from work.

JeremyD 11-13-2008 09:12 AM

kids these days hate talking on the phone - I know the best way to get to my daughter (16) is by texting.

Anywhere between 500-1000 sent and the same received is pretty normal.

my younger employees text me more than they call me. After a few texts back and forward I usually say "Call me" cause I get tired of the small keyboard.

BRPORSCHE 11-13-2008 09:34 AM

Bahahaha. Twenty in a month? For someone my age (21) that grew up texting we can send twenty texts just walking to our next class. I send and recieve about 4,000 texts a month.

Jim Bremner 11-13-2008 09:37 AM

I text my sons to come down for dinner!

neice was over 5k a while ago

cantdrv55 11-13-2008 09:41 AM

My son's caling plan allows 1500/mo.

Zeke 11-13-2008 09:44 AM

And I wonder how many are meaningful. I've never sent a text. Email is fine for me.

Rick V 11-13-2008 09:47 AM

I am about 3,000 a month, I am also 43 years old and have adapted very well. My daughter is in basic training and that is the only way we can keep in contact (constantly)

bivenator 11-13-2008 10:05 AM

Call them to dinner with a text, yep me too. It works well as I don't have to compete with headphones to get her attention.

onewhippedpuppy 11-13-2008 10:09 AM

OMG LOL!

Cell phone is just a tool for me... texting is part of that tool... I'm 50-something and I sent less that 10 texts a month.

I said tool... huh... huh,huh.

onewhippedpuppy 11-13-2008 10:26 AM

I hated it until I bought a BlackBerry. I don't know how anyone used to a QWERTY keyboard can stand typing on a standard phone. I still don't do it often, but it comes in handy when I'm stuck in meetings.

gprsh924 11-13-2008 10:28 AM

Couple thousand

nynor 11-13-2008 10:50 AM

for a 20'ish person? about a billion.

i don't text. period. my brother is the only one that dares to send text messages to me. if i get a text message, i usually call the sender and ask them why they don't just call me. its usually a stumper of a question for them.

DavidB911 11-13-2008 10:56 AM

i only do about 250/ month. i know my total is way low, but i only text the girl(s) i want at the time. ;)

legion 11-13-2008 11:04 AM

One or two a month.

TerryH 11-13-2008 11:05 AM

I've received a few texts, but never sent one. ATT tried to charge me for some text messaging once, I then had the option removed from my phone. Almost had ATT removed from my phone too.

T77911S 11-13-2008 11:54 AM

i refuse to text. my brother sent me 2 the other day, just to mess with me. i think his daughter does about 20 a minute, he seems to be getting close to that, yeah tim, i know you will see this but take it like a man, leave the texting to the girls and kids. :D
one of the guys here at work just got divorced, he had to go get a new phone to keep up with the texting to the "Ladies".

Dueller 11-13-2008 12:02 PM

Teens and younger twenty-somethings use it as the preferred mode of communicating. When in their early teens we tried to limit them to 200/per month per our phone plan. We gave up and paid the extra $20 per month on our family phone plan for unlimited text. We've seen anywhere from 2000-6000/month PER KID. Although 19 y.o. step son is now down on the 1500 range .

The new grape vine.

I really don't mind as long as we connect when we need to.

Cornpanzer 11-13-2008 02:02 PM

Sorry, I just dont get it.
I tell my younger friends that a new top secret technology has been invented...it's like texting, but you can talk into the machine and the person on the other end can HEAR WHAT YOU ARE SAYING!!!! Thats right, you no longer have to type out a conversation...its called a TELEPHONE! Quicker, easier....duh! Making a 30 second phone coversation into a 2 minute typing process - craziness.

Let me get this straight...we are developing computers that you can simply speak instead of typing. Yet, millions of teenagers are using a device designed for speech to type messages to one another. Boggles the mind.

The response is always something along the line of.."Yeah, but I can text in places I cant talk...like school, church, the movies."

No pinhead, if you are in a place where it is inappropriate to talk on the phone, then it is just as innappropriate to text. I practically had to take my neices phone away from her at dinner one time because she spent the entire time texting her sister. The irony is that half of the time when the two of them are together they are not talking because they are mad at each other!

look 171 11-13-2008 02:07 PM

a 20 something year old should be talking to girls instead of pushing those little buttons on the phone.

I have never done it, not even once. I don't even return them. I can't wait to have the damn key board in the center of the steering wheel so you would not miss any of the important messages like how far are you from the restaurant. Freaking crazy world.

look 171 11-13-2008 02:14 PM

What ever happen to looking someone into their eyes and place your hand out and have a firm handshake and talk things over. My buddy's brother had a kid and they live an hour away in Orange County. He tex him while we were having lunch the next day. WTF's wring with a phone call???

Rick V 11-13-2008 03:00 PM

My wife was in Manhattan when they had the huge power outage. The phones didn't work but the cell towers had back up power. They were jammed up so I couldn't get in touch with her. we did manage to get text messages through. It is how we stayed in touch for a few days. There is a place for them.

I just got texting recently and I can say that often times I get frustrated with people and wish they would just call me. That being said, there are so many times when it is very convenient to text people, especially if it is a quick question or statement that doesn't necessarily warrant immediate reply. That and it is nice when you can't otherwise talk, or do not want to talk so you do not disrupt those around you. For instance, I ride a bus to a couple of my classes that are very far away and often text while doing so because nothing is worse than listening to the obnoxious a-hole on the phone next to you.

DanielDudley 11-13-2008 03:26 PM

I ran an unofficial survey for you. The average is 14 billion.

Rusty Heap 11-13-2008 09:17 PM

Proud to say ZERO text messages send or received.........call me a cave man, but I don't even own a cell phone.

too funny that "everyone wants to be connected" but also "don't bother talking to me, text me bro"

Just like email, it's taken me 20-30 seconds to type this but I could say it all in 5-6 seconds using my vocal cords.

Live talkers don't need spell check either.........unless you're from the east coast and Bahstun.

Who do you think we're texting ;)

billybek 11-14-2008 05:19 AM

I get most of my job #s and po. #s by text. It is handy when you have to complete paper work and bill a job.
Very rarely send. It is a pain on the phone I have....

masraum 11-14-2008 05:33 AM

I'm 38. In the last three months my texts have been (TX and RX combined) ~300, ~450 and ~ 350. I'll say that I probably average around 350-375/month.

Many of mine, are sent in the morning to make sure that the guy that I carpool with is awake and ready when I get to his house or to/from my wife. I also get some from my work to let me know of certain statuses.
