DVD Fab Decrypter (free!!)
alongside...
DVD Shrink (free!!)

Rips them down to your harddrive, removes encoding, and DVD Shrink will make the files a bit smaller without really changing the quality. DVD Fab can also only rip down the movie itself, not the extras/menus/credits/crap that clogs up the disk.

Anything VLC can play it can transcode to a different format... ffmpeg can also do it, as can mplayer. Win32 versions available of all of them... and all free (in cost) and Free (as in speech)

Great, thank you!

How long does it take to rip a typical DVD? Minutes? Hours?

Minutes. Probably 15 minutes to rip a complete dual layer DVD (7, 8 gigs). Takes about 45 minutes to shrink it and burn it to a blank DL disk using Nero. Naturally, these times may vary based on computing power, by my lil' old 3 year old desktop pulls times like that.

If you have a big HD or external drive, you can archive the movies shrunk down to, oh, say 4GB each and just store them all.

Each program has a 10 minute learning curve.

I like mpeg streamclip from squared5.com

Free and works really well.

Use it for a lot of my conversion tasks.
