Wesite hosting opinion wanted

Has anyone used BlueHost? What are your opinions? I want to create a personal site that also has a private family forum. I'm currently using a free hosting site but it's very limited.

http://www.bluehost.com/index.html

If you're planning on serving up any significant content or run PHP stay away from GoDaddy. They literally run hundreds or thousands of websites on a single server because 99% of the content is basic "Here's a picture of my dog" webpages that get accessed 4-5 times per year. Any significant app will be slower than 50W oil on a 10 degree day.

Try a 1and1 VPS.

Should do just fine.

As far as free hosts go, I've used 000webhost.com . Up to 1.5GB space and 100GB bandwidth. They have limitations; but they've been reliable. Zymic.com was another name I came across as well.

Thanks. No, I actually don't. I have static I.P.'s and could, but I'm running off a DSL line. I can manage a couple of light websites, but nothing heavy.

Did I mention goDaddy.com? I run several sites off them with tons of email accounts and I've never had a single challenge. Check out their rates and the service is impecable!

Ask nostatic? He recently made some changes and checked out some new servers.
Search goDaddy here for more feedback on different hosting sites.

Good luck.

What I need is a personal site that won't see a heavy load, just something as a hobby. I also want to incorporate a forum for my family. We are spread across the country and this is a way for us to keep in touch on a daily basis. I want something that has a good balance of features and ease of maintenance. I currently have my family forums on a free site but I would like to move to something a little more robust. BlueHost seams to have the balance I'm looking for but I was hoping some of you guys had tried it before I drop the cash on it.

Honestly, get everyone on Facebook and keep your accounts private, only allow visibility within your group.

Lets you blog, post pictures, videos, update your status wherever you have an internet connection.

The youngsters in your family will already be familiar and much more apt to stay in contact.

No programming, no maintenance, oh yeah, and free.

This is excellent advice.

Especially note, as stated, for everyone to properly set-up all of the privacy prefs.

+2, that would be the easiest thing to do with the most capability, especially for those that are not computer savy. I use facebook pretty much daily and it is incredibly easy to use. As he said about privacy, the settings can be made so that no one can search for you or find you unless you are their friend, so you can keep all your info safe.

I have never used Facebook. I thought it was another MySpace deal. I'll look into it, thanks all.

I can host web content, etc. Most of what I do is write custom web applications.

So your basic content you can create, no problem serving it up. Same with DNS (so your domain name points to an IP), and email accounts, although it is much easier to redirect email accounts to gmail, etc..

For your private forum, pick the software you want and I can install/configure it and lock it down very tight so only specific logins (your family) would have access/see it, etc.

Drop me a PM if you are interested.

It's actually quite dynamic. Cool because it reminds you of birthdays, has chat right in the browser. Fun little applications to keep things lively.

I run/maintain 3 dedicated webservers that client's use for projects that I consult on.

Personally I still use facebook.

It's interesting.
