Kiehi, Maui what to eat and do? Leaving Friday
8 days there. I was in Maui about 20 years ago. Any suggestions on places to eat, things to do. Taking the wifey and the 19 y/o son and the 24 y/o daughter. I may do the bike ride down the volcano and snorkel Suggestion, guys please chime in. If I have nothing better to do, I'll try and post some pics.

Not to sound like a broken record about Maui, but the boat trip to Molokini is way over rated. There is much better snorkeling around the beaches in Wailea.
Go to the Hookipa look out one windy afternoon and check out the windsurfers. Have fun!

If you find yourself on the Wailea side of the island, stop off at Stella Blues. Good food and a good deal by island standards.
http://www.stellablues.com/ If your going to do the drive to Hana, take your time. Explore the hidden spots. No matter how hot at sea level, bring warm clothing (fleece jacket and long pants) if you are headed up the volcano. It can be damn cold on top.

BTW, prepare to CRY as you head up and down the volcano in your rental car. One of the nicest sets of twistys on earth. Amazing looping sweepers down the side of the volcano.
Oh to have an Elise on that road......

If you can, cut your stay on Maui a day or two short and go to Molokai and ride the mules to Kalaupapa National Historical Park (the Leper Colony). I usually go to Hawaii every summer with my family and this was by far the memorable thing we did. www.muleride.com/

at dawn or dusk, walk north of whalers villiage. north of kanapali resort. you will see new resort. just past that is field. walk down trail to beach. climb sand berm. sit down with umbrella drink.
you will notice a reef. you will notice lots of turtles. you will then notice fins. ie shark fins. ie. TIGER SHARK FINS! like lots of them. they are enjoying breakfast or dinner. they are happy. very very happy. the turtles are not happy. go swimming in front of whalers village. my buddy who lives there gave me this tour. very very sobering! |

David Paul's Lahaina Grill. The seared Ahi is incredible.
Komodo's market for morning cream puffs.

Plan a sunset dinner at the Sea Watch in Wailea. Eat outside on the veranda. Great food, views.

Go to Snorkel Bob's and rent some snorkeling equipment. The folks working there will point you to the better lava flows. We went snorkeling twice a day at the beach in front of our condo. It was really amazing. Turtle Town was very cool, too.

Search for "Maui" here in OT. There have been a few threads worth checking out.
P.S. Hugh, did that local Maui condo referral work out? |

Breakfast at the Gazebo at Napili Point - bring a book to read while you wait in line to get in - very small restaurant on the ocean in a resort, but the food is excellent. (If you like fried rice and have a big appetite - get it - my favorite. They also have the standard eggs, pancakes & waffles.)
Go to Lahaina to Kimo's and have the Original Hula Pie for desert - chocolate lovers dream desert - enough to share with 3 or 4 people. Their macadamia crusted mahi mahi is pretty good too. If you take the drive to Hana (need a P car for this drive), check out the lava tube just before you get to Hana - it's pretty cool. (This is pretty much an all-day drive if you stop to take in the sites along the way.) Haleakala is always worth the drive. Bring some warm clothes. You can hike into the volcano, but you need to be prepared with hiking shoes & water. It's a deceptively long hike - and remember the thin air at altitude. If you are a 'steak' person, don't go to the Ruth's Chris in Lahaina, go to the one in Wailea - quality & service is much better - from experience. I also recommend Mamma's Fish house $$$. I think Moose McGullycuddy's closed down recently ... Enjoy! We go every year in February - love the place!

Definitely plan a trip to Haleakala. Try to arrive before sunrise. If you find yourself in Wailuku in the morning, try Tasty-Crust for breakfast. Have fun, be patient with the traffic. It's gotten very crowded.
