MP3 Sharing - is it illegeal to...

...share an MP3 - for free - with someone who owns the original LP but the track is unavailable on I-Tunes?

To wit - somehow, I forgot about the great cover of Don't Let Me Down found on Bad Company's debut album.

Don't ask, don't tell . Seriously, I'm a firm believer in paying the artists their due (and I always have), but the RIAA, Ascap, BMI "legalized extortion racket" has gone WAY overboard. My take, if you bought the album, you have a "right" to the MP3, and I wouldn't care what "their" position is.

illegal, probably in the most technical sense, yes. reasonably justifiable for an honest and ethical average Joe, sure.

What about downloading Flash video files (*.flv) from places like YouTube and such, and then watching them on a Flash Video viewing application on one's computer?

My guess is that's also illegal, but hey, I'm not a lawyer.

Hell, a lot of the stuff on youtube is copyrighted material anyway that's probably on there illegally.

My $0.42: If you already bought the song, regardless of what media you bought it on, it should be legal to have multiple copies of the song, regardless of what media you put it on.

I buy most of my music on CD's. (Too paranoid to buy/obtain stuff on the web). And I immediately convert it to MP3 and rip mulitple albums onto a single CD to play in my car's MP3 player. While sound quality suffers a little (I do rip to MP3 in the highest setting available - 320kps), there is the convenience of having 4-5 CD's worth of songs on one CD, and I do like the titles appearing on my display.

My $0.42, and my own opinion. As always, YMMV,
-Z-man.

I agree with Z-man. I have the Eagles "Hell Freezes Over" and accidentally stepped on the CD. Does this mean that I now have to buy a new copy? Doubt it. I should be able to borrow/download a new copy.

If I give my copy away, then decided I really want it, I would have to buy a new copy.
