What's this old Craftsman drill press worth?

One of my co-workers has been tasked by his wife to clean out the garage. And one of the items in his garage is a drill press handed down from his father. He's not terribly handy, so he's just looking to get rid of it, and has set the price accordingly, at $50.

Anyone ever work with one like this? It's a bit elderly, but it's a Craftsman from the era where that still meant something, and it's better than what I have now (which is nothing).

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Dan

I think I paid $50 or 75 for a drill press similar to that a while back. That one looks pretty neat with the old style styling. I'd probably pay $50 for it.

You can buy a new Craftsman DP for $100.

You can buy a DP from Harbor Freight for anywhere from $80-500.

It will be better quality than a brand new HF drill press that will have junk bearings and chuck. It is definitely worth $50 if you have a use for it. The only problem with small drill presses like this, is that they typically do not have a slow a very slow speed for larger drill bits or holesaws. Still, they work great for drilling small holes.

I use my old "ShopMaster" all the time for holes under 1/4" dia and while it is very old, it is way better quality than the chinese junk larger one to left of it that I bought new.

Alright then, so I checked on the Sears website, and the cheapest Chinese-made DP they have is $130. I'm sure I'd be better off with one that has a super-super-slow speed for the big bits, but that this is definitely better than the handheld DeWalt I typically use for these sorts of jobs.

Thanks for the inputs, gentlemen. I'll be one elderly drill press richer by the end of the week.

Dan

Almost without exception, whatever it is, they don't make 'em like they used to.

I used to have the same press as that. It was great. The Ex-Mrs Crusty got it in the divorce. I built a bunch of brackets and three full roll cages for off road cars with mine and never had a problem.

I've got an old DP that I bought at an estate sale that's similar. I can't remember if mine is 3 speeds or 4, but it's pretty cool.

Pretty common to be able to adjust spindle/chuck speeds. Drilling wood vs steel, one speed doesn't work best for both.

I would buy it and I already have a pedestal type. Grab the chuck and check for slop. Probably worth rebuilding if necessary. I'd clean it, but never paint it as it looks original now.

Getting harder and harder to find something for the shop not made in Taiwan or China.
