I got that in an email some time back. Incredible (lucky) that the only intact area of the car is the driver's seat.

gprsh924 11-18-2008 09:13 AM

Hopefully he didn't have any passengers.

That picture is representative of the reasons that the most aggressive driving I have ever done has always been when I am alone in the car.

On the bright side, it was only an Audi.

Glad no one died in that wreck!

red-beard 11-18-2008 09:22 AM

I guess that will teach him to park near the Gruppe...

I believe we call that blue.

I'm sure Audi would rather not have these pictures displayed in advertising, but IMO this is some of the best advertising you could ever get for a car - look at how intact the driver's area is - no crumpling anywhere. That's amazing, and shows what good engineering can do.

t6dpilot 11-18-2008 11:59 AM

Yeah, I have seen that too. I remember seeing something like this in the late 90's I think. A bright blue A4 (or maybe an A3) hit a tree going along the Mulsanne Straight. Like that, this car split into two or more pieces and was all over the place. Somebody had to die in that one. Has anybody seen that set of photos?

Oh, an no more smart black Audi comments.

RWebb 11-18-2008 02:30 PM

well, you can't do that at 50 mph

At the velocity it was going at the moment of impact, I think it has more to do with luck than engineering. I doubt the Audi engineers made just the passenger side a sacrificial part of the chassis. The tree just happened to intrude at a most convenient location in the vehicle.

The passenger side air bag wouldn't have deployed unless the system had detected someone in the seat.

The driver is a lucky man. Can't say that about his passenger.

First person to say "that'll buff out" is a registered idiot.

speeder 11-18-2008 05:12 PM

That thing is going to have some electrical gremlins when they put it back together.

SlowToady 11-18-2008 05:18 PM

Surely no worse than the factory electrical gremlins....
