how good is a '95 MB E300 diesel?

Just looked at a 1995 MB E300 diesel with the 6 cylinder. The front bumper cover needs replacing and the turn signals work intermittently. The mileage is 197,000 and the asking price is $4,500 firm although the guys wife said they have been trying to sell the car now for a year and the price is NO LONGER firm. She emphasized NO LONGER.

How good of a car is this? I have done more research on the W123 series and don't know much about this model.

JEALOUS

The w124 is (and s class w140) is considered the last of the "engineers" mercedes. Great, great cars. Given the choice (I didn't have the choice) I would have taken a 95 e300d over the 96-99 w210. I love my car but the w124 is really the last of the old school MBs.

Go over to Mercedesshop.com's diesel section. The expertise there is fantastic, much like it is here for porsches.

The om606 engine is AWESOME, although I'm pretty sure that one wouldn't be a turbo... but still: DOHC, 24 valves... great sounding engine.

Off the top of my head, biggest issues with the engine are:
- leaky o-rings on the plastic fuel lines: cause air leaks, poor starting, rough idling, hesitation & smoke. Cheap & easy fix
- Seized glow plugs. SCARY. check them all, see if they've been done recently. I had one break off in the head:

Great cars though, I just LOVE them.

Did they make a E320 in '95? That was the badge which was on the rear but I could only find info on the E300.

I bought a 95 E300D with 87K miles for $20K in 2002. Drove it to 175K miles and sold it for $7500 in 2007. Cost me $17K in maintenance/repairs over 5 years.

Watch out for the stuck glow plugs. With mine the head had to come off.

I have a PDF detailing the expenses around here somewhere.

YMMV, but these cars can get expensive quick depending on what breaks or deferred maintenance.

I had an'85 300D before I had a Porsche.

Man, it was a relief when I bought the Porsche. Much cheaper to keep running.

My parents just sold a 95 E300D. Bought it new and sold it with 310,000 on the clock and other than routine maintance, an air conditioner idle controll unit and motor mounts the car was trouble free. Sold it for $4500 to a neighbor that is using it to commute from NC to Michigan twice a month to visit his daughter in college. Still gets around 30 mpg.
Mom and Dad replaced it with a 2008 Bluetech E320. They have had Mercedes Diesels since the early 1980's and they have all been great cars.
I have had three Mercs and have had great service out of all of them(gas models).
