Were you ever into New Wave music?

I found a station that played New Wave for an hour tonight. It helped keep me awake for the long drive home from NV. Gary Newman, Depeche Mode, Flock of Seagulls, New Order, DEVO, B-52s, etc. Brought back some great memories.

Saw X so many times in el lay. Always htought they were a cross between punk and country.

But the first "new wave" - or so I thought at the time, I heard driving south on the 101 thru Santa Barbara. KTYD. I heard the Cars of all bands. I think it was Just What I Needed. I remember thinking, this is different!

The Cure, The Fixx, Tears for Fears, Joy Division (then) New Order, OMD, Depeche Mode, Divinyls, Romeo Void, and of course the incredibly underrated Talk Talk.

Funny this thread should come up: while walking the dog I was trying to remember the words to the last song in "Napoleon Dynamite." The Promise by When In Rome.

XTC - Dear God - I loved this song.

Dear god,
Hope you got the letter,
And I pray you can make it better down here.
I dont mean a big reduction in the price of beer,
But all the people that you made in your image,
See them starving on their feet,
cause they dont get enough to eat

From god,
I cant believe in you.

Dear god,
Sorry to disturb you,
But I feel that I should be heard loud and clear.
We all need a big reduction in amount of tears,
And all the people that you made in your image,
See them fighting in the street,
cause they cant make opinions meet,
About god,
I cant believe in you.

Did you make disease, and the diamond blue?
Did you make mankind after we made you?
And the devil too!

Dear god,
Dont know if you noticed,
But your name is on a lot of quotes in this book.
Us crazy humans wrote it, you should take a look,
And all the people that you made in your image,
Still believing that junk is true.
Well I know it aint and so do you,
Dear god,
I cant believe in,
I dont believe in,

I wont believe in heaven and hell.
No saints, no sinners,
No devil as well.
No pearly gates, no thorny crown.
Youre always letting us humans down.
The wars you bring, the babes you drown.
Those lost at sea and never found,
And its the same the whole world round.
The hurt I see helps to compound,
That the father, son and holy ghost,
Is just somebodys unholy hoax,
And if youre up there youll perceive,
That my hearts here upon my sleeve.
If theres one thing I dont believe in...

Its you,
Dear god.

Still am. While many in the late 70's were having Kansas, Bob Seger, and Led Zeppelin pushed on them, I couldn't wait to try alternative sources of music. Elvis Costello, B 52's, The Dickies (anyone remember them, way ahead of their time), The Cars, The Cure, The Smiths, The The, Ramones,. I would name more, but I've lost most of those 8 tracks!

How about the Psychedelic Furs?

From their eponymous album, 1980:

Elvis Costello is better than ever; see his latest album Momofuku. "Beyond Belief" from Imperial Bedrooms is perhaps one of 5 of my favorite songs of all time.

Echo & The Bunnymen are still making great stuff:

I still listen to New Order, Joy Division, Morrissey, the Smiths and Wire, among others.

The Smiths

Sweetness
Sweetness, I was only joking when I said I'd like to smash every tooth in your head.

That's some messed up lyrics.

How about The The?

This vid is from when Johnny Marr (Smiths) played guitar with The The/Matt Johnson:
