Hotels in central London?

Wife and I are going to stop off for a couple days on our way to India.

We were looking at staying in The Soho, seems like a good central location. Other suggestions?

$500USD range, we will have a child with us.

We slide through London a fair bit and always stay at either the Sheraton Park Tower in Knightsbridge or the Hyde Park Hilton. Both fine middle of the road hotels.

Both are central to what we like to do (galleries, shops, food, pubs, the park etc).

SoHo is a bit scuzzy in my view—unless you're into peep shows and overpriced drinks.

I like the Chelsea in Knightsbridge.

Around the corner from Harrods.

I've stayed in both and concur wholeheartedly.

I've stayed at the Hilton & as above it was perfectly located. There is a tube stop a stone's throw away which will take you anywhere in London. And if you get up to the executive lounge it has one of the best views of London.

I wasn't going to mention the drinks, breakfast or hors d'œuvres or our junior suite facing Hyde Park . . . . all free with HH . . .

Oh & a tip . . .

You can tube from Heathrow right to that tube stop. There was only one flight of stairs to negotiate the whole way. We paid £ 38 to get to the Hilton by arranged taxi & only £ 6 return via tube with a Zone 1 card.

Coincidence?

I think not.

Time for a finger of Macallan.

First off... avoid Soho if you can, especially with a child.

BTW how old is said child?

Other than that the hotels mentionned are all very 'middle of the road' decent hotels... but the real question is what do you really want to do whilst you are here?

Is it see the sights and do the tourist thing? In which case staying in those will allow you to move around well..

Or do you want time to see how London really lives?

The reason I ask is that with a kid its a very different experience.. you could saty at the Holiday Inn in Camden Town.. just a few seconds walk from Camden Market, Regents Canal, Regents Park and the Zoo.. and if you are staying over a week end see what real people who live here actually do....

You are also able to jump on the northern line (Underground) into town..

Let us know...

Have not been i a few years but always like the Park Lane Sheraton. Far enough form the bustle to get away from the crowd but close enough to walk to Picidally Circle. oh and really nice car showrooms around the corner...

Child is 5. Very accustomed to travel.

This will be a very quick tourist/shopping stop. Wife will probably want to spend a day shopping. Loves to find bargains on high end clothes (thank god.....). I was thinking 1.5 days tourist, then set the wife loose for a day of shopping. Perhaps I could take the kid to the zoo or some other child friendly attraction while the wife bankrupts us?

Thanks all for the help.

Covent Garden's probably better than Soho if you want to stay central. Try www.lastminute.co.uk , I use them a lot if I fancy a nice night out in town and want to be out in a casino or something late. They often have good 4 & 5 star hotels at very good prices. Often they won't tell you which hotel you're booking but with a bit of google detective work you can find out very easily

In that case definitely try something different...

You and little one can spend the day in the park and zoo.. she takes a cab down to Oxford Street/ Bond Street/ Mayfair (c £10) to ruin you...

When are you over..

Let me know as we might be around...
