Well, overall it was a success - for the video. Everything worked this morning and I was able to grab about 10 minutes of video. No thermals, so each flight was very short and low. I plan on trying again tomorrow... I also will play with antenna placement on the ground. The first flights, the receiver was on the ground and for some reason had better reception. I moved the receiver to the top of my car and noticed more reception loss. Anyway, here's a quick frame grab. he quality of the grab is low, I've yet to figure out how to properly export single frames from Adobe Premiere.

The video is uploading to Youtube. I'll add the link later. I have been under the weather for three days now and I'm wiped. Time for a nap.

File->Export Movie

Hit Settings

Change File Type option to Tiff or Targa

If you have in/out points set you can choose a range v entire clip.

That's what I did. Even saved it again and checked the deinterlace button.

Since you are giving advice...

What are the best settings in Premeire Pro to export movie file, making it high quality, but small in size? i go to File->Export->Adobe Media Encoder.
Format QuickTime - Codec Apple Mpeg4 Compressor, 480x360, 24 bit, 29.97 fps. For this video, no sound. The video is 10 minutes and about 850 megs. I started the upload 2 hrs. ago and it's still going....

Very cool!

-I'm sitting in my house underneath a 2-meter Goldberg "Gentle Lady" [what a horrid name, and a kit that leaves a lot be desired: the outer spars of the kit are balsa, and the wing will fold under even the weakest Hi-Start.....

I don't fly anymore. My Airtronics rig needs nicads, and since I don't even have time to go to the bathroom properly anymore, much less address my RC batteries.... I don't fly RC. My life is total hurry! I know that is total excuse, but I have an RC heritage: I was the youngest member of the Toledo Weak Signals in 1983-1985.

Besides.....RC is REALLY difficult! It is easy to fly a 747. I'm type rated on the 727 and the 747. I have 1500 hours of time flying 747's, 500 hours as Captain, and I can tell you that it is really easy to fly. It is probably as easy to fly as my new 16 foot boat is to drive. That "Gentle lady" above my desk right now? That thing is WAY more difficult to deal with.

RC pilots who fly real RC planes are REAL pilots! Flying those things is WAY difficult!

N!

Video is about 10 minutes. No sound, I will look into an active mic soon - not that it really matters. Goal is to get as clear a picture as possible. More testing tomorrow. BTW, no refunds on your 10 minutes :).

Also, As I said before, no thermals, so very short low altitude flights. I may not get a chance for the 3000+ ft. video until spring.

Very cool. Only problem is it makes me want to hop on a plane and go somewhere.

Speedo959 12-07-2008 05:50 AM

On my first electric plane I got the idea of taping my cell phone to the belly. Went up a few times and shot some cool footage, until my first call in flight! Plane did a nose dive and was completely destroyed. I'll try and post the footage.

Cool.

But the crowd here won't be satisfied with that video. There's not a single naked person in it -- not even a cute girl in skimpy shorts. You are going to get complaints!

slodave 12-07-2008 02:44 PM

Success! The cloud layer broke this morning and we were all able to get a nice last flight for the weekend. I am exited, as i was able to fly my glider for periods of 5-10 minutes looking only at the cam corder screen flying as if I was sitting in the cockpit.

Downsides today were battery related. At one point, the video receiver battery dropped below the correct voltage and the video feed was lost and during the end of the last flight, the video transmitter battery dropped below correct voltage. I kind of expected this, but wanted to get an idea of how long the systems would run. Looks like I will have to charge the batteries the night before each flight day. No big deal.

Still have some issues with the video signal dropping occasionally, depending on which way the glider is headed, but I have some ideas....

A shorter video to follow later. I actually was able to chase some circling crows around.

No naked people. That will have to wait until next spring/summer. It's cool enough here in L.A. that sunbathing is done for the season. ;)

There has to be a way to use Premiere Pro to export video that Youtube won't compress, but I have not found it. I have tried so many different ways. I'm done for now. Here are some frame grabs....

One more. About 1200 ft. above ground. That's a crow.

Whatever, I'm frustrated with this Youtube thing. Here's a 4 minute clip, no take off or landing.

I like what I am seeing!

thanks for posting

slodave 12-08-2008 10:34 PM

Thanks Trekkor. I'm having fun.

Looks like I'll be ordering the on screen display (OSD) module for the telemetry. I'll also probably have to look into a high gain antenna for the video receiver. I also need to start studying for my HAM license.

stomachmonkey 12-09-2008 05:01 AM

Hey Dave,

I know you are not thrilled with the video quality but it's really not bad considering.

Your "subject matter" is a lot of small high contrast objects that are in motion ranging from bright skies to shadows. All shot with a a low megapixel camera.

Not easy to compress and make look cinema.

Cool stuff.

Next step: Synthetic Aperture Radar.

slakjaw 12-09-2008 07:29 AM

I stumbled across RCpowers.com the other day and they do some pretty amazing stuff with RC planes. You should check it out :)

This is a power wench:

slodave 06-21-2009 10:50 PM

OK, trying to block the image of the power wench....

Latest video with the new on screen display (OSD) overlay. I need to get the receiver antenna up in the air for a cleaner signal... Altitude was reporting AGL not MSL. I need to change that.

So close to what I started 5 years ago, but still so far away...

Impressive, Dave! The screen overlay is damn cool. I need something like that for my onboard camera for the track....
