How much work do you actually do in a day?

If you had a timer and hit "start" while you were doing actual work, and "stop" when you were interupted, took a break, surfed PPOT ;), what would that timer read at the end of your average work day.

Well, I generally come in at least fifteen minutes late, ah, I use the side door - that way Lumbergh can't see me, heh heh - and, uh, after that I just sorta space out for about an hour.

Yeah, I just stare at my desk; but it looks like I'm working. I do that for probably another hour after lunch, too. I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work.

It varies for me. I have fits of massive productivity followed by (and preceded by) large periods where I am waiting on someone else to do something so I can get back to doing my work. I'm about a year ahead of schedule on my project too, so that leads to long periods while I wait for others to catch up. Because I have an excellent grasp on the business needs my programs are supposed to meet, I can usually get them done very quickly.

After this project is over (I've been on it for six years and it will last at least another three or four years), I'll move on to something else. There will be a steep learning curve and I won't be able to get work done as quickly as I can now.

My work day when in the field has pretty much been start at 9 and pick up at 3. No breaks, no lunch (I eat snacks on the fly). I figure that's anyone's 8 hour day when you include breaks and non-productive time and most likely better than that in a lot of circumstances. In general, that makes about an 8 hour day with driving included.

If I worked for a another contractor out of his shop in his truck, it would be about the same. Yet, I see a lot of those guys goofing off, so I don't know how some contractors that supply the truck make any money. And I work faster than most, or so I'm told. I'm only charging for the 6 hours, so I'm screwing myself. Many of my customers don't even pick up on the deal they're getting if I'm hourly.

But, it's all over now because of the lack of work. So, I sit here and play when I should be making some molds for parts. At home I have so little time management skills it would pay for me to take any work with me and go to someone's else house. ;)

Work??? You mean working for wages???

masraum 12-05-2008 01:10 PM

My productivity lately ranges between 25 and 80%. I'm burned out. I'm going to be working normal hours and turn that around after the holidays.

m21sniper 12-05-2008 01:16 PM

About 4 hours a day.

Tidybuoy 12-05-2008 01:20 PM

I work in an office full of chicks that like to please me. So, to answer your question....I get lots of work done. That's work isn't it?

Porsche-O-Phile 12-05-2008 01:31 PM

I seriously try to put in an honest eight hours, but it's probably more like six or so if I'm physically in the office eight hours. On a typical day when I'm physically here 10-11 hours, I think I put in an honest eight. My occasional 2-3 minute "Pelican breaks" are for sanity and usually when I'm done reading or posting, I minimize and go right back to what I was doing. Maybe some days a little more and some days a little less, but I think it does honestly average out to eight hours of actual work stuff.

M.D. Holloway 12-05-2008 01:33 PM

Actually a lot - I multi-task to the Nth degree (when I'm not watching maint. milk projects!). I wake at 5AM and don't shut down till midnight if not 1AM. I eat at my desk, when home I only watch TV (Discovery) with the Kids before bed. Once they are down I spend time doing crap for wifey then after she goes to bed I write.

Fortunitly The stuff I do at work I can do while doing other things (talk on the phone, surf web, go on this bored, shop, scan for porn...)

are you hiring?

dhoward 12-05-2008 02:36 PM

I spent all day trying to get an IBM FE to do a memory upgrade this weekend.
District managers, phone calls, pages, conference calls....

so....1 day out of 5?

vmisquez 12-05-2008 02:39 PM

When I first started with no real experience or marketable skills... 60+ hours on 40 hr week salary.

fast forward 17 years.... 1hr week. and paid 40 hr week salary. Those seemingly bad time really paid off and are still paying.

tabs 12-05-2008 02:45 PM

w...oooork!!

911Rob 12-05-2008 02:47 PM

cough, cough, ....... bull$hit...... cough, cough
Ha! A little BS here and there 'eh?

I work about a 30 hour work week; but I'm apparantly very efficient; ha, ha.
Good question, thanks.

SlowToady 12-05-2008 02:49 PM

When I'm back home? 12 solid hours. Once or twice a week the boss will feel generous and give me a lunch break, and it drops to 11 hours.

At school? I don't do nearly so much work for wages, but I'm constantly either doing homework, studying, or staring at the wall while trying to come up with elegant solutions to problems.

Embraer 12-05-2008 03:34 PM

if im at our training center teaching, i'll get a solid 8 hours in. if i'm helping with courseware development or admin stuff, i'll probably get about 2 hours of work done in an 8 hour day. too much chatting, playing tricks, and telling jokes to the flight attendant instructors.

Icemaster 12-05-2008 03:50 PM

I'd be awfully damn productive if it weren't for the PITA customers or annoying employees.

Shaun @ Tru6 12-05-2008 03:56 PM

not enough.

I've seen you pick up a pencil.....um, no!

gprsh924 12-05-2008 04:30 PM

about 50% of the time that I actually attempt to focus on schoolwork...considering the fact that it has been about 18 hours a day the last week, I've been putting in solid 9 hours a day...that won't slow down for 2 more weeks until I get a glorious and much needed three week vacation.

Oh Haha 12-05-2008 05:13 PM

I'm usually in the office by 6am and I shoot to be home by5pm for supper with the family. My office is 6 miles from home so I can work right up until it's time to go. I don't really take a break, so to speak although I do eat something around noon. I spend a lot of time in the car seeing clients and accounts, solving employee problems, planning projects, etc.
We have end of the day items that need to be finalised and each fiscal period we have reports and inventory to do which I have to supervise. My boss is 60 miles away so we communicate by Blackberry ALOT. As well, any client emergency must be dealt with quickly and that could mean a sudden drive to a city up to 80 miles away to problem solve on site.

Yes, I find time to get dogfood, drop mail off, and (OMG )surf Pelican. Some of our accounts are retail stores so I can see a client and pick up an item if needed.

All in all, I would say I work an average of probably 10-11 hours a day but that doesn't take into consideration that I am constantly running over things in my mind. I like to work 2 weeks ahead so that I minimise surprizes. I'm also a clean desk freak. I strive to finish each day without anything left undone barring long term projects.

All that said, I really do love my job and the challenges each day brings. Truly, no 2 days are alike.

EDIT: As the "boss", I am on call 24/7.

Arizona_928 12-05-2008 07:23 PM

too hard for the pay i get..
Is anyone hiring?

islandnine11 12-05-2008 07:43 PM

30 hours every 4weeks.

HardDrive 12-05-2008 08:40 PM

This 'work' concept is, how you say in you language?..... not something I know of....

on2wheels52 12-05-2008 08:52 PM

I'm the entire workforce; one minute I'm sweeping the sidewalk, the next making a loan at 180%. Who's going to check out that PS III before it gets sold? That SIG .40 may be defective, better take it to the range this weekend before selling.
Jim

Bill Douglas 12-05-2008 09:34 PM

I don't actually do anything. And I guess I put in a fairly full day at it too.

bell 12-05-2008 10:21 PM

I bust my ass from the time i clock in until its time to clock out, not counting the hour for lunch.....maybe someday it'll pay off....

desertt5 12-05-2008 10:37 PM

At least 1 hour............... a week

Joe Ricard 12-06-2008 05:33 AM

Hmm, Depending how many people break things. My job consists of fixing everything from Databases to Processes.
Some days nothing appears broke = long days.
Somedays everything is Effed up = time to go home already?

So far everytime the boss takes a promotion I get brought along.

livi 12-06-2008 05:47 AM

A calm day in summer sometimes virtually nothing if no patients admitted. Pretty rare occasions though.

Most night shifts nowadays are 16-18 hours non stop work.

David 12-06-2008 06:49 AM

Since this is a public forum, I'll just say not as much as I should. A few years ago Pelican Parts was blocked at work and I got a bunch of stuff done that week. Apparently an executive was blocked from shopping online for a new TV and the blocks were lifted :D

Ever so often I'll go a whole day without going to PP. That's a busy day!

sammyg2 12-06-2008 12:12 PM

In all actuality? I make about 5 or 10 decisions in an average day. At least half of the rest of the day is spent studying to make the right decision.
The decisions either save my company money or costs them money, often to the tune of millions.
Sometimes I can earn my paycheck in the first 15 minutes.
For the rest of that day I'm just a leak in the payroll ;)

Zef 12-06-2008 05:53 PM

37.5 hours / week.....same beat.

artplumber 12-06-2008 05:57 PM

A lot more would be possible, except people keep interrupting me asking questions like how much work I actually get done every day.:p
