Confused about electric prices...

after reading the oil thread, i saw my electric bill

using rough numbers

3000KW = $250 (July/Aug)

2000KW = $267 (NOV)

Wow that is a jump in $/KW

what gives.....

Pennsylvania

This is another example of high fuel prices. The utility company passes along the costs to you through increased kwh rates and higher fuel charges. The rates for kwh and fuel are on the bill, but looking at them may make you cry. It's amazing how fast they raise the rates and how slowly they come back down when their fuel costs are lower. They utility companies know that you really don't have alot of options other than paying what they demand. The utility board in your state is supposed to keep they companies honest, but that never seems to be the case.

That's not fuel price related. Oil was $140 in July, it's half that in Nov.

We have 'deregulated' power here in Texas, and you contract with the company for 2 years at a certain price. When my contract expired it went from about 13 cents/kwh to 20+ cents. I changed companies in August and got it back down to about 15cents/kwh. But now I'm locked in to a contract that was priced when Oil was at it's highest.

It looks like you're paying about 13 cents/kwh in Nov.
