Air Raid on Pearl Harbor

On December 7, 1941, Japanese planes attacked the United States Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii Territory killing more than 2,300 Americans. The U.S.S. Arizona was completely destroyed and the U.S.S. Oklahoma capsized. The attack sank three other ships and damaged many additional vessels. More than 180 aircraft were destroyed.

A hurried dispatch from the ranking United States naval officer in Pearl Harbor, Commander in Chief Pacific, to all major navy commands and fleet units provided the first official word of the attack at the ill-prepared Pearl Harbor base. It said simply: AIR RAID ON PEARL HARBOR X THIS IS NOT DRILL.

Indeed...not a lot of mention of Pearl Harbor these days...

Most unfortunate.

Too true...A log truck driver here, B.J. McDonald, was on one of the ships attacked. B.J. is gone now...I miss our coffeshop conversations.

My only point is that it doesn't seem to get much attention any more, that's unfortunate.

I'm not looking for a pissing contest on this, if you thought of this today, great. Thanks

I didn't put it in PARF because I didn't want it to be political.

Have a nice day!

This day sure doesn't get the attention one would think it deserves. I know it's observed; but not like other famous/infamous dates. I've been to Pearl Harbor and the memorials are impressive.

And a bit of trivia I just learned. Canada declared war on Japan the evening of the 7th. The U.S. declared war the next day.

Isn't it ironic that Mr. Obama just appointed the first Asian-American to the post of Veteran's Affairs Secretary.

my uncle Jack was out drinking on the 6th, on KP as punishment, peeling potatoes, which he threw at planes, since that was all he had to fight back with at the time.

Not ironic. Hopefully a wise choice.
