Say a prayer for our pup!

Our dachshund, Sherlock, hurt himself coming down the stairs yesterday, but seemed fine afterwards. Even this morning when I got up he seemed to be doing ok. He's 3.5, so not old by dog standards. Today when I got home he wasn’t walking well, so we took him to the emergency vet. He’s partially paralyzed, so we are going to take him in for back surgery tomorrow first thing in the morning. I guess it's not uncommon for dachshunds to slip a disk. I wish we'd had a clue yesterday when it happened instead of waiting. He’s staying over-night at the emergency vet tonight.

Cross your fingers, say a prayer, whatever you do. This dog is my wife's baby. It'll kill her if he's not ok.

The doc tonight seemed to think he was a good candidate and said that the surgery has a good success rate. I hope he wasn't just trying to make us feel better.

Thanks all

The doc saw Sherlock and said that he's not that bad. It's just a herniated disk which Dachshunds are prone to. He said that there's an 85-95% chance of a normal recovery. He was able to walk a little so that's a good sign. The nights rest must have helped a bit.

He's going to get surgery today, stay a day or two, and then come home. Recovery to walking around is usually about 2 weeks.

Fingers crossed.

THanks all for all of the prayers and thoughts.

Hoping for the best! That is one of my favorite breeds, I've always been worried about back problems, though. That's one cute little dog.

Thanks for all of the prayers, positivity, and well wishes.

Sherlock is out of surgery. The Doc said there was a herniation between the 12 & 13 vertebra but that spinal cord did not look to bad, and only had minimal swelling. He said pups with that type of presentation generally fully recover – though it might take several weeks. Sherlock will be on IV overnight and he will reassess him in morning and decide when he can come home.

So things look good so far.

I like coming into a thread like this one late. It went from bad, to good in a few posts.

I hope Sherlock is back to being his old self as soon as he can!
