when it's 20F outside
don't ride your motorcycle. bad bad bad idea. especially on the highway.
Just spent 2 hours on it, thought I was well-prepared, and was for the first 40 minutes. 41 minutes on, not so much. balaclava and gloves worked. multiple layers, lots of wool, lined jacket, goretex, etc. not enough. |
only 20 deg. if you are standing still.
check for wind chill factor at 60 mph. brrrrrrrrr. i tried a two hour ride in my beck spyder [no heat, no top] last winter and was chilled to the bone. |
20? geez its too cold to ride when its 50!
|
was doing 70 much of the time. -5F wind chill. can't wait until it's 40 again.

You need electric vest and gloves. Even then, too much danger from ice on bridges and such.

Hey man, at least you've got some source of adrenaline rush. My winter motorized fun consists of either racing sims, or sitting in the cold dark 911 with a scotch making vroom-vroom sounds... :(

There's a reason why I don't live in Boston, anymore. A riding/sportycar season that only lasts from April until December is one of them. But hey, look on the bright side, you'll soon be able to drive that 4Runner of yours on frozen lakes and go ice fishing!

HAHA. Yay OK. It was like 70 today. they predict snow tomorrow but it will be good drivin weather be the weekend. I had the sunroof open all last weekend. :P

Years ago, used my KZ 750 to commute 40 mile rounds trip one Jan for a few weeks while my car was down. Wore ski bibs. Down jacket, with a few layers under it. Throat Coat attached to my full face. Heavy ski gloves. Was actually remarkably warm. If it rained i tossed a Dri Rider suit over everything. As long as there wasn no snow or ice on the road I was ok
That was 25 yrs ago. With the advancement in clothing today. things have gotten much better. |
Shaun, aside from wind chill, the biggest thing you need to be aware of is cold tires! They never heat up in that weather and you don't even realize the lack of traction until you go into a curve a bit hot.

Kurt, that I at least had down. Was going through turns balancing slow through the turn versus keeping upright just because I was going slowly. Not pulling this stunt again any time soon. Going to be a cold winter here I think. Can't wait until April.
