Doctor says I need to make some lifetsyle changes.

I went to get some travel med prescripts from a new doctor recommended to me by Joeaksa today. Didn't do any bloodwork, just weight, BP and discussed family history. Doc says I need to make some changes.

This is what I can't figure out. When I drank like a fish, my BP was always good, around 120/70 or so. When I was a lean, mean running machine and got my best marathon time, the gov't. BMI chart said I was near obese. My knees went bad after my seventh marathon and so I've been lifting a lot for the last several years, while still doing a lot of treadmill work. I hit the gym 4-5x per week and don't go there to socialize or rest on the machines. I have been drinking very little in the last month or two, working out a lot, eat fish three nights a week, steamed greens about five nights a week, only use 1% milk, Smart Balance butter subst. Sure, I have dessert now and then and make big breakfasts on the weekends. But my weight and BP are not in good territory now. I'm starting to think I'd be better off reverting to some more bad habits. What the hell is going on? Fortunately, I'm about to spend 3+ weeks in China, where I'll be eating super healthy and walking many miles every day, but also smoking and drinking like I'm on vacation.

I knw the feeling, when my BP was high, real high, I quit drinking, started the meds, are better, I gained 40lbs (mind you, I don't eat alot at any sitting) and BP went up in 1 month, they kept switching meds, but my numbers were still high, I finially said screw it, went back to a good pizza once a week, everyday happy hour +, stopped the meds, I went back to where my weight was (220) and BP went to a safe level. That lasted for years, until this year, my BP had crept back up, but this time the meds are working & I'm drinking a beer as I typehttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/wat6.gif

My doc: How's life going?

Me: Taking forever.

Doc: I've got good news then.

:D

My doctor told me to start watching my weight so I got it out in front of me where I can see it really good ;)

I didn't mean to put this in PARF.

Don't worry, I think there's room here for this discussion to get political, you right-wing nutjob.

Rick Lee 12-10-2008 06:33 PM

Well, thank God I have health insurance unlike (what do Dems say it's up to now?) 47 million others. Didn't see any illegals in the waiting room. Didn't see any abortion protesters. Left my gun in the car. What am I missing?

I say F the doctor, what did this guy ever do for you?

Hahaha.

Still overweight?
The average brain only weighs about 3 pounds, in your case obviously less. You may as well have them put it back in.

Oh, the complexities of a right wing, paranoid.
On his death bed.:)

One should avoid doctors and hospitals whenever possible

You eat right, excercise and have good genes, sometimes 2/3 ain't good enough. Knew a guy with some mega cholesterol gene, ate pretty damn good. BTW, if you smoke, you should stop; cigarettes, weed, crack, opium, crystal meth, smoking is bad, mmmkay

OOPS! Sorry. I meant to say something political. Oh well...

Rick, you did 7 marathons? Wow...learn something new everyday.

Whenever I tell tales of people with wild, interesting lives, Rick you always seem to come up....I guess that's a good thing, :)

Clearly Rick, you need to find another Dr.. pretty simple really..
Same thing happened to me when I needed a hip replacement, Drs kept telling me to change my lifestyle,, I finally found a doctor who told me if I wore one out he could always put another one in!! ( I've had a hip AND a knee replaced and still ski 40+ days a year)

This was my all time peak shape, in Berlin, in pouring rain, having slept for an hour in a car parked near the starting line the night before. Oh, and we drove two hours to Halle after this before we got a shower and a real meal. Did Marine Corps Marathon a few weeks after this one. This is when the BMI chart said I was near obese. Kidding me?

Well, the scale and BP machine don't lie, do they? I'll see how the bloodwork and new BP numbers look when I'm back from China. First trip there I was dying of guilt for going three weeks without working out, drinking and smoking like a champ and came home with my clothes hanging off me. I had not eaten a single piece of western or processed food for three weeks. Amazing what that does for your shape.

Rick Lee 12-10-2008 07:17 PM

I'm probably 30 lbs. heavier in this photo, which is recent. But I don't think it's morbidly obese. At least I felt pretty healthy sitting in the waiting room today next to a girl who easily outweighed me by 100 lbs. and a woman with an oxygen tank on the other side.

9dreizig 12-10-2008 07:21 PM

geez I'm in shape and am 5'9" 195 lbs....
Maybe we should ask Wayne to start a fat middle aged guys forum ???

If you're wondering what's going on and you aren't off the smokes yet, that should be priority one.
