online culture survey (please take it)
Yes, this is a social experiment, but for work and for a good cause. If you're interested, please take a few minutes to complete the survey - I did it in less than 5 minutes. The short story is that we have designed software that simulates social situations and is designed to teach soldiers how to avoid cultural snafus with the locals.
This survey is trying to get data to validate a subject matter expert's opinion on a Chinese culture model. If you know little about Chinese culture you are the perfect candidate to take the survey, but all are welcome (the first question has you indicate your familiarity with Chinese culture). We're trying to get enough quick responses to include the results in a conference paper draft that is due soon. Thanks for taking part in this social experiment ![]() http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=pUIwgeu5Y_UC62D08F324Eg |

seeing as how chines oil companies are bankrolling the sudanese government that is responsible for the ethnic cleansing, i find it unlikely that they would be participating any any worthwhile "peacekeeping" activities.

Done.
Being largely unfamiliar with Chinese culture, I'd be interested to hear the "right" answers sometime!

Hope I did OK... we just signed some fancy agreement about having Chinese instructors over and us sending some of ours over there... including a fullbright scholar

Long one Todd. Few thoughts...
Even the dense people could figure out that so many questions about height might mean don't do it. So many of those questions were "it depends", eg/the introductions to equal or higher rank would be welcomed, but not so much the grunts.

I wanted to help, but only got through ten questions before I lost interest. Anything else you need help with?

for the record I didn't design the survey, and I'll pass on the comments to the team. I agree that the multiple questions on/about the same thing are a "clue" but remember this isn't designed to teach anyone. This is merely a survey to get data to see non-native perceptions about culture. We are checking this data against "expert" models to see how they differ/agree. As for this survey, it is common to try and ask the same question in different ways to keep people from "gaming" the survey. But that design in itself is an art form.
The teaching system is actually pretty cool. It is a "game" where you "sit down" with a virtual character. In the first version you'd sit down with an Iraqi police captain. You have an objective going in (usually to find out information) and you have to conduct yourself accordingly. There is a "trust meter" and by your actions and words you gain or lose trust. There are a lot of subtle and not so subtle things that influence these situations and the goal is to have people be able to practice with a virtual character. Thanks to everyone for participating. Every little bit helps. |

So are we invading China now?
I will not corrupt your survey with my ignorance.

I can't get into character with such limited information. Who is this "Wong Ming" and what is his motivation? Is he perhaps a closet gay that desires Major Smith? Or his he angry at the American's presence? Is he married? How old is he? Does he like his job? I need more information.
