When I was a young man, I was instructed how to defeat the speed limiter on the gas carts. Lift the seat, and there was a spring-loaded thingy that would stop the engine at a certain speed. Luckily for us young chaps, golf-tees worked perfectly for jamming this mechanism, thus allowing speed to be limited only by the engine's ability to not blow up due to over-revving. This was extremely entertaining. On a wet course, drifting was possible.

If its a gas cart, defeat the governor as stated above. Beyond that, you're probably limited to dress up items. I'd opt (as a friend did to his) a cheapo Grant racing steering wheel and genering aluminum pedal covers from AutoZone/Pep Boys for that racy feel:D

What about pss9's?

sammyg2 12-12-2008 08:36 AM

More batteries, more voltage, less windings and bigger diameter wire in motor, remove any sort of governor.

Many years ago at seizure world in So Cal, all the old folks were driving golf carts around the retirement village.
A few geezer gear heads started modding their carts. next thing you know, they are racing and hitting 60 mph. Yep, one of em crashes and got hurt pretty bad.
New rule, 10 mph max for golf carts.

sammyg2 12-12-2008 08:38 AM

Or you could put a CBR1000rr engine in it ;)

Here's a nice one, be patient. Nothing happens for the first 30 seconds but it's worth waiting for

And the ultimate future darwin award winner, an 80 mph golf cart

Freaking rednecks LOL.
Guy runs the 1/8 mile at 8.80 and 80 mph in a golf cart. the background music is appropriate

Depending upon where he lives, you might pick up a propane heater unit that sits in the cup holder.
Bought one for my dad - came in pretty handy last weekend while golfing when the temps were in the mid 40's.

David 12-12-2008 09:35 AM

What sammy said, more batteries!

varmint 12-13-2008 03:36 AM

think i'm going to go with a voltmeter, speedometer, maybe a radio. and some chrome.

that and some place for the dogs to sit out of the way.

ben parrish 12-13-2008 04:27 PM

Definitely get the volt meter. When we lived in the Bahamas, a golf cart was our only car. I got a higher speed motor (electric) and could easily outrun most of the gas carts on the island. A windshield is very important; get one that folds in half for those times you want the wind in your face.
Since the cart is electric, don't forget that the radio needs to be able to run on 48volts unless you get a dedicated battery just for the radio. A big wink mirror is nice. Lot's of on-line vendors for parts and accessories.

Here's one I did up a couple years ago:

4" lift kit/tires, 100watt AM/FM/CD, speedometer. I made the custom front end. It'll do about 40mph with the original motor hopped up.

Everything you wanted to now about mod'ing a golf car but were afraid to ask.........

A retired friend I use hang out with had the fastest cart in the Country Club and would supplement his income hot rodding other members carts. Back then it was pretty simple, the high speed rear end was the big thing.
